Minnesota Wild defenseman Brock Faber is out indefinitely after undergoing successful surgery to repair a fractured skull. The 24-year-old sustained the head injury when struck by a puck during a preseason game against the Dallas Stars on September 25, 2026, leaving the team without a key blueliner as the regular season begins.

Faber was down on the ice briefly before skating to the bench under his own power. He returned for his next shift and played in the rest of the period but did not return for the third. He was taken to a local hospital that night once his condition worsened.

Faber is entering his fourth full season with the Wild, or his fifth season in the NHL overall, all with the Wild. He had 51 points (15 goals, 36 assists) in 80 games last season, helping the Wild reach the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and also had four goals and six assists for 10 points in 11 Stanley Cup Playoff contests. He averaged 24:41 of ice time last season, second on the Wild only to Hughes (27:54), and led them in short-handed time on ice per game (2:24). In three full NHL seasons, Faber, a 2020 second-round pick, has 33 goals and 94 assists for 127 points in 242 regular-season games, averaging 25:01 of ice time during that span.
A member of the gold-medal winning Team USA at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy, Faber also played in the 2022 Olympics and the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off. Faber is a native of Maple Grove, Minn., and played three seasons of college hockey at the University of Minnesota, where he scored seven goals and added 46 assists for 53 points in 97 career NCAA games.
Minnesota opens its schedule on Thursday at Nashville. As the team prepares for the matchup, the focus remains on Faber’s recovery.
