The International Space Station remains a bustling orbital laboratory where astronauts evaluate equipment designed to sustain human life far beyond Earth. Testing Exploration Technologies and Medical Production in Microgravity

While astronauts gather physiological data in orbit, NASA is looking closer to home by recruiting participants for a ground-based simulation set to begin no earlier than August 2027 at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. The yearlong campaign combines elements of the Human Exploration Research Analog and the Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog into a single integrated mission.

Selected volunteers will spend a total of 14 months enrolled in the program—including two months of pre- and post-mission training alongside 12 months inside two distinct confined habitats. Participants will initially reside in a two-story transit vehicle adapted from the HERA facility, before transitioning to a 3D-printed surface habitat that simulates planetary conditions complete with a crop cultivation area, medical room, and a sandbox for simulated spacewalks.
