Inter Milan sign Curtis Jones from Liverpool

Curtis Jones has officially completed a transfer from Liverpool to Internazionale Milan following a successful medical. The deal for the academy graduate is worth £30m with an additional £4.3m in add-ons, ending a protracted transfer saga that began in January.

Another high-profile transfer window saga has finally reached its conclusion. Liverpool FC announced that homegrown midfielder Curtis Jones has left the club to join the Serie A champions after weeks of negotiations between the clubs.

From Anfield Origins to San Siro Transfer

The move brings an end to Jones’ entire senior career with his boyhood club. Having joined the Liverpool academy at the under-nine level alongside contemporaries such as Trent Alexander-Arnold and Missy Bo Kearns, Jones made his senior debut in January 2019 under then-manager Jürgen Klopp, according to club records. His breakthrough moment arrived the following year when he scored his first senior goal against Everton in the FA Cup at Anfield.

Across his time with the Reds, Jones made 226 appearances, scored 22 goals, and secured six trophies, including two Premier League titles. Yet his final season proved to be a source of frustration. Despite featuring in 49 matches across all competitions during the 2025–26 campaign, he managed just 28 starts and expressed discontent at missing out on a regular role in his preferred midfield position, occasionally finding himself deployed as a makeshift right-back under Arne Slot.

Inter Milan’s Extended Pursuit and Final Valuation

The Italian club’s interest in the 25-year-old midfielder dates back to January, when an initial attempt to secure him on loan with an option to buy was rejected. Negotiations accelerated during the summer as Jones entered the final year of his contract with no extension agreed. In June, Liverpool turned down an initial bid of around €25million (£21.4m), holding out for closer to €40million.

Fresh talks materialized after intermediaries indicated that Inter were willing to elevate their bid to a €35million package. Ultimately, the parties agreed on a £30m base fee supplemented by £4.3m in add-ons, alongside a 10% sell-on clause for Liverpool.

Jones joins a squad that recently added fellow Englishman John Stones on a free transfer following his departure from Manchester City.

Squad Impact and What Lies Ahead for Liverpool

Jones’ departure leaves a notable void in the Liverpool squad. As club correspondents noted, his exit marks the departure of the only established Scouser in the first-team squad, with Jayden Danns remaining in the academy ranks. New head coach Andoni Iraola had initially stated a desire for the midfielder to remain, but with contract talks stalled and the player seeking a fresh start, a compromise became inevitable.

With the summer transfer window drawing to a close, Liverpool face decisions regarding squad depth in midfield. Analysts suggest the club must either enter the market for a reinforcement or look inward by giving expanded senior minutes to young talents such as Trey Nyoni and James McConnell as the team adapts to life without their longtime academy graduate.
