Spider-Man Brand New Day Leads Box Office Over Insidious Sequel

Spider-Man: Brand New Day collected $39 million in its fourth weekend, driving its worldwide total to $2.22 billion. As the Sony blockbuster chases domestic box office history, it held off major new releases including Sony’s own horror sequel Insidious: Out of the Further and Lionsgate’s action thriller Mutiny.

Peter Parker is refusing to yield the top of the box office. Sony and Marvel’s blockbuster Spider-Man: Brand New Day secured another $39 million during its fourth weekend in North American theaters, according to studio estimates. That brings the film’s domestic cume to $854.9 million from 4,006 locations, positioning it just behind 2019’s Avengers: Endgame at $858 million on the all-time domestic chart.

The superhero feature has proven unstoppable globally. With $2.22 billion to date worldwide, the picture ranks as the third-highest grossing movie in history in terms of worldwide grosses, recently passing 2022’s Avatar: The Way of Water. Industry trackers note that Brand New Day remains on pace to eventually challenge The Force Awakens’ domestic record of $936.7 million.

Insidious: Out of the Further Scares Up Second Place

While Spidey maintained a firm grip on first place, Sony’s second major release of the weekend claimed the runner-up spot. Insidious: Out of the Further opened with $25.3 million domestically from 3,303 theaters, alongside $35 million internationally for a global start of $60 million.

Produced by Screen Gems, Stage 6 Films, and Blumhouse Atomic Monster, the sixth installment in the horror franchise sits safely in the black against its lean $18 million production budget. The opening lands in the middle of the franchise’s historical debuts, trailing 2013’s Insidious Chapter 2 at $40 million and 2023’s Insidious: The Red Door at $33 million, but outpacing the original 2011 film.

“The drop from [the previous installment’s] opening in July 2023 is substantial but typical of these sequels,”

The new chapter introduces a young mother who brings spirits back with her to the real world, featuring franchise mainstay Lin Shaye alongside Amelia Eve and Brandon Perea.

The Odyssey Sets Christopher Nolan Records in Third Place

Universal’s The Odyssey continued an extraordinary theatrical run in its sixth weekend, adding $19.5 million to drop just 17 percent from the prior frame. Christopher Nolan’s mythological epic has now accumulated $539 million domestically, surpassing The Dark Knight to become the director’s highest-grossing domestic release of all time.

Globally, the Matt Damon-starrer stands at $1.44 billion, holding its crown as the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever worldwide.

Mutiny and Spa Weekend Face Soft Landings

Further down the box office chart, new wide contenders faced a more difficult climate. Lionsgate acquired the Jason Statham action vehicle Mutiny, which landed in sixth place with $7.5 million from 2,703 North American locations against a $40 million production budget.

Directed by Jean-François Richet, the film casts Statham as a former Marine framed for murdering his billionaire boss. The opening was complicated by an accidental digital leak that made the movie available for free on Prime Video for several hours ahead of its theatrical debut.
