Emergency officials ordered tens of thousands of residents to evacuate near Reno, Nevada, on Sunday as the human-caused Hawk fire tore through 6,087 hectares. The fast-moving blaze, fueled by shifting winds, has destroyed mountain homes, closed major highways, and injured six people.
A rapidly spreading wildfire sparked by human activity continues to threaten neighborhoods northwest of Reno, prompting widespread evacuation orders across Washoe County. The blaze, officially named the Hawk fire, ignited on Saturday and expanded aggressively through the rugged terrain of Peavine Peak within the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest.
Evacuation Orders and Conflicting Figures Across the County
Scale estimates for the emergency evacuation zone varied among reporting outlets. According to CNN cited by international coverage, approximately 90,000 residents received urgent orders to leave their homes. Meanwhile, local authorities specified that 42,000 residents were placed under direct mandatory evacuation orders as the perimeter approached the edges of the University of Nevada, with an additional 45,000 people notified within adjacent warning zones.
Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam described severe operational difficulties as the fire advanced on Saturday evening. The situation was extremely confuse, the sheriff stated, explaining that erratic wind directions caused flames to jump fire trucks and cut off escape routes for fleeing residents.
