Kit Harington will play Gilderoy Lockhart in Season 2 of HBO’s Harry Potter series, replacing Nicholas Hoult after scheduling conflicts forced an exit. Harington, who previously voiced the character in an Audible audiobook, joins a cast that includes Dominic McLaughlin and John Lithgow ahead of production starting this fall.
Game of Thrones star Kit Harington is stepping into the Wizarding World for HBO’s upcoming live-action television adaptation. Deadline reported that Harington has been cast as Gilderoy Lockhart for the show’s second season. The recasting comes less than two weeks after Nicholas Hoult was initially announced for the role, according to USA Today.
Production scheduling adjustments triggered the change. HBO had to navigate pre-existing commitments for Hoult, including his return as Lex Luthor in the upcoming Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow. When the production timeline for Lockhart’s scenes shifted within the Season 2 schedule, the overlap became unmanageable, and the studio let the actor out of his deal, Deadline reported.
Familiarity With Gilderoy Lockhart and the Wizarding World
While the switch represents a major live-action recasting, Harington is already well acquainted with the character. He voiced Gilderoy Lockhart in Audible’s full-cast audiobook edition of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, which was released in December 2025.
Speaking to Variety regarding his audiobook performance, Harington described himself as a lifelong fan who grew up alongside J.K. Rowling’s book series.
“It was a really simple yes, because I love the character. As far as cameos in a series go, you don’t get much more entertaining and fun to do as an actor than Gilderoy Lockhart. It was a no-brainer.”

In the source material, Lockhart is introduced in the second book as an arrogant, fame-obsessed author who becomes the new Defense Against the Dark Arts professor at Hogwarts, relying on Memory Charms rather than actual magical skill. Kenneth Branagh famously portrayed the character in the 2002 film adaptation.
Production Timeline and Season 2 Development
Season 2 of the Harry Potter series was greenlit by HBO on May 7. Production on the second season is scheduled to begin this fall, well ahead of the Christmas Day premiere of Season 1, titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The series will air on HBO and stream exclusively on HBO Max.
HBO CEO Casey Bloys explained in a March interview with The Times that writing for the second season was already underway to manage the aging of the young cast. Our goal is to not have a huge gap, you know, especially because the kids are growing,

The adaptation features Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. Key adult cast members include John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid. Francesca Gardiner serves as showrunner and executive producer, working alongside director and executive producer Mark Mylod, with Jon Brown elevated to co-showrunner for Season 2.
