While a software beta build inadvertently exposed a demonstration clip of the hardware in action, the incident did not accelerate the commercial timeline. The project remains positioned for a 2027 rollout, as engineering teams continue resolving supply chain bottlenecks and software adjustments. Apple employees had reportedly begun advanced testing earlier this year before those problems emerged. Apple had planned for the earbuds to go on sale as early as the first half of this year, but the launch was postponed after delays to a revamped version of Siri. The new Siri is now on track for September after Apple upgraded its underlying models. The project has entered a phase where prototypes feature a near-final design and capabilities, according to people with knowledge of the matter, who asked not to be identified because the work is still under wraps.

The short video clip features a man — who is wearing the new AirPods — holding up a book with the cover displayed, so that Visual Intelligence can see the book title. Mark Gurman of Bloomberg has previously reported that the rumored AirPods with cameras are designed to take in visual information in low resolution
and act as eyes for Apple’s AI features, potentially allowing Siri to give turn-by-turn directions or answer questions about the wearer’s surroundings.
The leak understandably sparked speculation that Apple might be preparing to unveil the earbuds at its upcoming September event. Apparently, not so fast, as Gurman says the product is still off Apple’s 2026 release schedule, with supply-chain and software problems having already pushed it from its original 2026 plan into 2027. The confirmation came in what Mark Gurman described as when a developer version of a Mac computer software update accidentally included references to several upcoming Apple products, including a video of the AirPods with cameras in action.

One of the more interesting details is that the tiny cameras aren’t expected to function like conventional cameras. According to Gurman’s sources, they will use low-resolution sensors designed to scan the surrounding environment, rather than capture traditional photos or videos. The idea is to give Siri and Apple’s AI features another way to understand what the user is seeing. The technology uses the earbuds’ cameras to understand what’s happening around the wearer and provide that visual context to Siri and other AI features.
Whenever they arrive, the new earbuds will not use the cameras to shoot video or take photos — the privacy issues raised would be way too much for Apple to sanction that, it’s thought. The stealthy form factor may exacerbate the existing privacy concerns surrounding camera-equipped AI gadgets. Instead, they would be used for Visual Intelligence, the smart feature which uses the camera on the iPhone to translate the poster in front of you, add the content to a calendar and more. Right now, there’s no way to use this feature on AirPods as they are camera-free. The cameras essentially act as eyes for the Siri digital assistant and aren’t designed to take photos or video. These components — located in both the right and left earbuds — allow the device to capture visual information in low resolution.
The AirPods shown in the new demo clip look like a slightly thicker version of the AirPods Pro 3. That’s what Gurman had predicted, along with longer stems to accommodate the cameras, and LED lights that indicate when data is being uploaded to the cloud. We only get a look at the AirPods from the back in the video, but no lights can be seen on them from that angle. Given those Visual Intelligence features, the AirPods are poised to compete with other camera-equipped AI gadgets like Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses, though Apple is also reportedly working on its own smart glasses too. Apple is betting that the new device can capitalize on the success of AirPods while also vaulting it into AI-enhanced hardware — an area where it’s facing competition from OpenAI, Meta Platforms Inc. and others.

Apple is said to have explored at least two designs for the camera-equipped AirPods. One version, internally known as B790, was based on last year’s AirPods Pro 3 design with added cameras and AI capabilities. A separate project, codenamed B798, was conceived as a more advanced next-generation AirPods Pro product with similar camera technology. Aaron Perris also highlighted references to the device spotted in a beta version of macOS Tahoe 26.7, which had fuelled speculation that Apple could introduce the product sooner than anticipated.
