Tornado tears through French village leaving dozens injured

A powerful tornado tore through the village of Pomas in southwestern France, injuring 41 people and damaging roughly 300 homes. The severe weather triggered widespread power outages, disrupted transport networks across the region, and forced the cancellation of a cycling race stage, according to local authorities.

Tornado Strikes Pomas and Surrounding Aude Department

Emergency responders deployed more than 120 personnel to the hardest-hit area in southwestern France after a tornado struck the village of Pomas on August 24. The extreme weather damaged an estimated 300 homes in the community of 1,000 residents, stripping roofs off structures and leaving streets filled with debris. National weather service Météo-France recorded wind speeds reaching up to 117 kilometres per hour in the nearby village of Arquettes-en-Val.

The violent weather extended far beyond a single village. An estimated 2,800 homes across 10 villages lost electricity as the storms moved through the region. French authorities had placed swathes of the southwest on orange alert for severe weather, prompting widespread power cuts and infrastructural strain.

Injuries, Hospitalizations, and Emergency Response

Out of the 41 people injured during the severe weather event, 15 were transported to local hospitals for medical treatment. Among those hospitalized was a pregnant woman who sustained injuries when her house collapsed on her. Eyewitness footage from the region captured a swirling vortex looming on the horizon above residential neighborhoods and tree lines.

Transport Disruptions and Vuelta a España Cancellation

The severe storms severely disrupted transportation infrastructure throughout southern France, delaying train services, forcing road closures, and causing flight delays and cancellations at major airports in Bordeaux, Marseille, Nice, Toulouse, and Paris to the north, according to Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot.

In the Aude department, officials canceled the third stage of the Vuelta a España cycling race after a severe hailstorm in the French Pyrenees forced competing riders to seek immediate shelter.

Broader Weather Context and Frequency in France

France typically experiences several dozen tornadoes each year on average, according to Météo-France. While the agency noted that the direct impact of global warming on the frequency and intensity of these tornadoes remains unclear, the event follows a summer marked by unprecedented heatwaves and severe wildfires across Europe, including a forest fire in southwestern France that burned 42,000 hectares.
