Carlos Alcaraz Withdraws From Cincinnati Open Title Defense Due to Wrist Injury
The defending men’s singles champion will not return to defend his crown in Mason, Ohio. Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from the 2026 tournament because of an ongoing wrist injury, tournament organizers announced on Tuesday, August 4, 2026.
Ranked as the world’s No. 2 men’s player behind Jannik Sinner, Alcaraz entered the month as a leading singles trophy contender. Last August, the Spanish star claimed the title when Sinner retired from the championship match due to illness after Alcaraz built a 5-0 first-set lead.
The Cincinnati Open announced via X that it wished all the best to its 2025 champion in his recovery process and stated that it could not wait to welcome him back the following year.
The tournament runs through August 23, 2026, opening on Saturday.
Grandmasters Pranesh M and Yu Yangyi Advance in Chess.com Open Playoffs
Indian Grandmaster Pranesh M and Chinese Grandmaster Yu Yangyi secured qualification for the 2026 Chess.com Open Playoffs following Play-In 2. Both competitors finished the nine-round Swiss tournament with identical 7.5-point tallies among a 98-participant field.
Pranesh captured the top qualification spot on tiebreaks over Wesley So. Yu earned the second advancement position by defeating So 2–1 in a playoff match that wrapped up around 4:30 a.m. Beijing time, impressing commentator GM Eric Hansen.
The tournament featured 98 participants, with GM Parham Maghsoodloo starting strong at 4/4 before fading with back-to-back losses. Maghsoodloo extended his streak to 5-0 in round five against GM Levon Aronian, showcasing a remarkable piece sacrifice that caught his opponent off-guard, before consecutive defeats to So and Pranesh derailed his momentum.
The turning point came in round seven when Pranesh defeated Maghsoodloo despite being down a pawn in a heavy-piece endgame. Pranesh explained that a single aggressive pawn advance—37.e6—opened his opponent’s king sufficiently to create winning chances.
Wesley So matched the leaders’ final tally with an identical 7.5-point score through a notably consistent path: three wins, a round-four draw against Pranesh, three more wins, and two concluding draws. Despite this strong showing, So fell short in the qualification match against Yu, marking the second Play-In tournament in which he reached the playoff-deciding match only to lose it, having previously fallen to GM Nodirbek.
The qualification format grants winners the right to pick their opening playoff opponents. Pranesh selected GM Vincent Keymer, while Yu chose GM Denis Lazavik. The next qualifying round, Play-In 3, is scheduled for Monday, March 23, beginning at 12:00 p.m. ET, with two additional Play-Ins next week determining the tournament’s final four participants.
Pranesh credited his comfort with speed formats for helping him navigate the event’s specific regulations.
Pranesh M explained that the no-increment time control suited him well because he was good with the mouse and played blitz and bullet all the time.
PGA TOUR Outlines 2028 Championship Series Schedule and New Markets
Looking ahead to the 2028 professional golf calendar, the PGA TOUR began confirming fixtures for the newly structured PGA TOUR Championship Series. Unveiled last month by TOUR CEO Brian Rolapp at the Travelers Championship, the new competitive model divides players into two distinct series: the PGA TOUR Championship Series and the PGA TOUR Challenger Series. The best in the world will compete regularly against each other on the PGA TOUR Championship Series, featuring a schedule of 23 to 24 events inclusive of the majors, THE PLAYERS Championship, a reimagined postseason and an annual team event (Presidents Cup or Ryder Cup).
Five confirmed events make up the initial rollout, blending existing Signature Events with a planned stop in a new market. The initial quintet is a mix of three current Signature Events as well as an esteemed venue in Torrey Pines that has hosted multiple majors, alongside a pledge to go somewhere new with a Sompo-sponsored event expected to be played in a new market for the TOUR. Clark also voiced support for expanding the footprint into western regions, noting potential markets under consideration such as Boston, Denver, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington D.C.
Wyndham Clark stated that he would love it if they expanded west to his home region, perhaps playing somewhere in Denver or Seattle or other untapped markets they did not usually visit, adding that he was really excited for 2028 and believed it would be the best thing for golf.
