Stevens emerged as the leading candidate for the part, stepping into mechanical boots first worn by Peter Weller in Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 cyberpunk feature film.
The project received an official eight-episode series order from Prime Video following development that began after Amazon’s acquisition of MGM in 2022. According to the official series logline provided by the studio, the show centers on a giant tech conglomerate that convinces the city to place a powerful robot on its police force—specifically a machine implanted with the consciousness of a beloved, fallen officer named Alex Murphy.

The series brings together an established team of creators from both television and horror cinema. Peter Ocko serves as writer, showrunner, and executive producer, guiding a narrative designed to lean into the satirical and social commentary roots of the franchise.
