GTA 6 Features 600,000 Unique Animations, Double Red Dead 2

Rockstar Games built 600,000 unique NPC animations for Grand Theft Auto 6, doubling Red Dead Redemption 2 and multiplying GTA 5 tenfold, according to newly revealed development data ahead of its November launch.

When Grand Theft Auto 6 arrives this November, players will step into an open world built on a scale of animation work previously unseen in the industry. Fresh off the back of Netflix’s GTA 6: An Extended Look premiere, a preview from the New York Times revealed that the open-world maestros at Rockstar Games created a staggering 600,000 distinct animations to bring Leonidas to life—its people, its critters above and below sea level, its cars, and practically everything else that moves.

A Massive Technical Leap From Past Rockstar Titles

The sheer volume of movement data represents a jump over the studio’s prior blockbusters. Rockstar developers told the publication that GTA 5 included a still impressive 55,000 animations when it launched back in 2013, while Red Dead Redemption 2 had an also almost unbelievable 300,000 animations. Just in terms of animation work, GTA 6 is 10 times bigger than GTA 5 and double the size of Red Dead Redemption 2, which is a result of the two-generation leap between GTA 5 and GTA 6.

This generational hardware leap allowed developers to diversify NPC models significantly. In general, the latter also has a significantly higher number of NPCs. These NPCs are more dynamic in that they vary in height, size, and expressions. A lot of care has gone into this part of the game, and this is seen best during the Extended Look’s nightclub footage, featuring different heights, sizes, and reactions.

Aaron Garbut Details Micro-Level World Building

Rockstar North art director and studio co-head Aaron Garbut, who’s been with the series for decades, also stressed the effort that went into the smaller details.

Garbut elaborated on the meticulous construction of random interiors across the map, noting how environmental storytelling ties directly into the population.

“Every room in the game, somebody thought about this,” he said. “Who’s sitting where, what they’re drinking, the marks that are left on the table. The pictures on the wall will have the people that are in that room, with their tattoos on their arms and their family behind them. That whole thing has been made, and built, and photographed, and placed in this random room in a random building in a huge city, in a world.”

Emergent Gameplay and Expanded Open-World Exploration

GTA 6’s latest footage shows off practically everything gamers had wanted to see, including the open-world itself and how Rockstar Games has brought Vice City to life. The latest footage shows just how reactive the game’s world and characters are, and according to Rockstar Games itself, the team has curated 600,000 unique animations for its NPCs. According to Rockstar Games, NPCs will sometimes randomly attack Jason and Lucia. The two characters can also eavesdrop on NPC conversations, which will trigger unique interactions, sometimes leading to conflicts or completely new side missions. All of this is part of GTA 6’s goal of making the most authentic open-world simulation seen in a game to date.
