CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins predicted that President Donald Trump will respond much more aggressively to congressional oversight and potential impeachment if Democrats sweep the midterm elections, warning that the administration will push back against investigations harder than it did during his first term.
The post-midterm political landscape in Washington could look dramatically different should Democrats regain control of the House or Senate, according to CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins. Appearing on the Pivot with Kara Swisher and Scott Galloway podcast, Collins outlined her expectations for a potential second-term standoff between the White House and a newly empowered congressional majority.
An Educated Prediction on White House Resistance
While discussing the midterm outlook, Collins emphasized that her assessment is an educated prediction based on reporting rather than a certainty. The Cook Political Report has shifted several key contests, moving the Texas Senate race from lean Republican to a toss-up, Iowa from a toss-up to lean Democrat, and Alaska from lean Republican to a toss-up.
Should those electoral shifts materialize into Democratic majorities, Collins expects the administration to take a hardline stance against ensuing investigations. According to the CNN anchor, the president’s previous experiences with impeachment have shaped how the executive branch will operate under divided government.
“I don’t think that they will handle congressional oversight the way they did the first time, and I think that the president hated being impeached so much, even though he expects it and thinks it’ll happen again this time. I think there will be way more pushback from the DOJ and from the White House, even than what we saw the last time around.”

During his first term, Trump faced two separate impeachments in the House: first for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress related to Ukraine, and later for incitement of insurrection following the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. He was acquitted both times by the Senate. Since Trump returned to the White House, House Democrats have already introduced at least three separate impeachment resolutions citing various allegations, including executive power abuses and controversial law enforcement policies. Representative Al Green filed another such resolution.
Clashing Views on Administration Strategy
Podcast co-host Kara Swisher expressed surprise at Collins’ assessment. Swisher argued that Trump would likely seek to cooperate with Democrats and reinvent himself, pointing to recent political outreach efforts and noting that Trump’s time in office is limited amid ongoing challenges like the Iran war.
