Philadelphia police are investigating a second armed robbery in Center City involving suspects carrying an AR-15-style rifle. The early Friday morning holdup on Sansom Street follows a similar robbery blocks away on Locust Street, prompting investigators to examine whether the two violent street crimes are connected.
Philadelphia detectives are searching for armed robbers after a 23-year-old man and his friends were accosted returning home in Center City. The latest incident took place around 2:15 a.m. on August 28, 2026, along the 1500 block of Sansom Street, according to the Philadelphia Police Department.
Investigators said two masked men jumped out of a light gray or beige four-door sedan featuring tinted windows. One assailant brandished what appeared to be an AR-15-style rifle, while the second suspect carried a black semi-automatic handgun. The robbers stripped two gold chains from a victim’s neck and demanded his silver diamond watch before fleeing westbound in the vehicle. No injuries were reported from the Sansom Street encounter.
Connecting the Locust Street and Sansom Street Robberies
Authorities stated they believe the Sansom Street holdup is linked to an earlier street robbery that occurred less than a week prior along the 1500 block of Locust Street. That initial attack happened around 3 a.m. on Sunday, August 23, 2026.
In the Locust Street case, three masked men exited a dark gray Honda Accord and approached three individuals. Two of the suspects carried handguns while a third wielded an AR-15-style rifle, according to police reports. A fourth suspect waited as the driver inside the getaway car.
Victims in the Locust Street robbery were ordered to the ground. When one person did not comply, an assailant struck them in the face with a handgun. The group stole cellphones, watches, car keys, wallets, driver’s licenses, and cash. Public safety records show the gray Honda Accord used in the August 23 robbery had been stolen from Cheltenham Township on August 19 before being recovered by police in Philadelphia.

Part of the Locust Street robbery was captured on video by a witness and posted to social media, footage that investigators are actively utilizing as part of their ongoing inquiry. The widely shared video showed a victim kneeling on the pavement while armed individuals pointed weapons at him.
Residents and regular visitors to Center City expressed shock at the brazen nature of the crimes involving military-style firearms in heavily trafficked commercial and residential neighborhoods.
“That’s pretty scary, like I’ve been here for about a year and a half now and I’ve always felt safe. Like I know there’s a lot of things going on right by all the bars, but to have someone with an AR-15 right by where you live, that’s pretty scary.”
