A catastrophic glacial collapse triggered a high-speed debris flow along the Nepal-Tibet border on August 26, 2026, destroying infrastructure and leaving hundreds missing. The disaster struck key trade routes, washed away a school minutes after a frantic evacuation, and prompted warnings of fresh flooding from unstable upstream lakes.

Glacial Collapse and Flash Floods Slam the Nepal-Tibet Border

The rapid landslide of ice and rock that devastated communities along the mountainous Nepal-Tibet border was triggered when the lower part of a glacier broke off and crashed onto the valley floor, according to satellite imagery and analysis published by Reuters. The avalanche of ice and debris swept down the Lhende Khola river, slamming into Gyirong port in Tibet and crossing into Nepal in a high-speed flash flood that washed away roads, power projects, and villages.

Chinese government geologist Guo Zhaocheng reported that the ice-avalanche debris flow travelled at about 50 metres per second, leaving residents and workers little time to react before extending for more than 20 kilometers. While Nepali officials initially pointed to a possible earthquake, the U.S. Geological Survey clarified that the recorded seismic energy was generated by the collapse itself, followed by the massive debris flow.

The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development stated that the surge sent a powerful wave of water, sediment, and boulders through the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems. Water levels at the Galchhi area downstream rose by as much as nine meters within 30 minutes, altering river channels more than 100 kilometers away near the Indian border.

Principal Rajendra Dawadi received an urgent phone call from a friend upstream in Betrawati warning that the river had overwhelmed the area, soon followed by a frantic parent reporting rapidly rising water levels.

Dawadi did not wait for confirmation, immediately ringing the school bell and directing teachers to clear classrooms. Approximately 900 children already on the grounds were led toward higher ground on a hillside overlooking the Trishuli valley, while incoming buses carrying roughly 700 additional students were ordered to turn back before entering the danger zone.

Within minutes of the evacuation, the 76-year-old school campus and its 18-room, three-storey building—constructed with assistance from the Indian embassy following the 2015 earthquake—was almost completely destroyed. While all students escaped safely, two staff members remain missing: non-teaching employee Chulrim Lama, who reportedly went back toward the school during the evacuation, and lower-secondary teacher Santos Parihar, believed to have been in his room in the teachers’ quarters.

The human and economic toll of the disaster spans multiple nations as rescue operations continue in debris-strewn valleys. The office of Nepal’s prime minister reported that 484 tourists were missing, including 391 foreigners and 93 Nepalis. Sunil Sharma, a tourism board spokesperson, detailed that the missing travelers included 133 Indian pilgrims heading to Mount Kailash in Tibet, alongside 47 from the United States, 34 from Australia, 33 from Britain, and 24 from Canada. South Korea separately reported that eight of its nationals working on a hydropower plant were missing.

On the Chinese side of the border, state broadcaster figures confirmed three deaths and 265 missing individuals in Gyirong. The route handled roughly 60 to 70 trucks daily carrying machinery, electronics, and food, as well as about 80% of Nepal’s electric-vehicle imports.

Experts point to long-term environmental shifts as a compounding factor in the disaster. Alton Byers, a faculty research scientist at the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research at University Colorado Boulder, explained that alpine permafrost is thawing due to climate change, destabilizing steep mountain slopes and increasing the frequency of catastrophic landslides and icefalls. Simon Cox, chief scientist at the Mountains to Sea programme at Earth Sciences New Zealand, added that warming temperatures and melting glaciers reduce ice support on slopes and boost meltwater.
