Manchester City have signed Enzo Fernández from Chelsea for a joint-British-record fee of £125 million, matching the Premier League benchmark set by Liverpool’s move for Alexander Isak. The Argentine midfielder has agreed to a five-year deal at the Etihad Stadium following weeks of mounting tension at Stamford Bridge.
The Record-Breaking Transfer Agreement
Manchester City agreed to pay £125 million ($169 million) with Chelsea to secure the 25-year-old midfielder, matching the record fee paid when Liverpool signed Alexander Isak from Newcastle United on Deadline Day a year prior. Negotiations accelerated over a 48-hour window, pushing past Chelsea’s initial asking price of £120 million after an earlier August deadline had passed without a deal. Chelsea had set an unofficial deadline for the deal to be completed earlier this summer at a minimum fee of £120m only for that date to pass, while the club had also given interested parties until August 14 to formalise their interest.
The transaction allows Chelsea to make an £18m profit on the midfielder they signed for £107 million from Benfica in February 2023. For Manchester City, the outlay marks a massive financial commitment in a window that also saw the club recruit Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for £116m, which was the second time City could potentially break their transfer record in the same window. The Fernandez deal comes amid Chelsea fury that Monaco pulled out of selling Lamine Camara – who was deemed as the Argentine’s replacement – in the final minutes of the window.
Behind the Breakdown in London
Fernández’s Deadline Day move comes more than three months after the Argentina international first told Chelsea he wanted to leave, and more than two weeks after the club imposed a deadline for bids. Relations between the midfielder and the club soured following a Champions League knockout against Paris Saint-Germain in March, after which Fernandez became increasingly critical of the club and told ESPN Argentina that he did not know whether he would remain at the club for the following campaign. The midfielder was later dropped for two matches by former Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior after an interview in which Fernandez expressed his fondness for Madrid amid reported interest from Real Madrid. It has been a turbulent period for Fernandez at Stamford Bridge, during which he and his agent, former Paris St-Germain midfielder Javier Pastore, courted interest from Real Madrid, only for the Spanish club to issue a statement denying any attempt to sign him.
The friction spilled onto the pitch as supporters jeered Fernández during the club’s final pre-season friendly against Real Sociedad and again in their Premier League opener against Fulham. New Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso subsequently left Fernandez out of the squad for the midweek Carabao Cup victory over Luton.

Monaco’s Late U-Turn and Chelsea’s Retained Word
The deal nearly collapsed due to frantic deadline-day developments involving a prospective replacement. Camara was set to join Chelsea for £47m and was going to sign a six-year deal pending a medical. Just after the 11pm transfer deadline passed, news emerged that Monaco reneged on the agreement they had with Chelsea, and they had informed the Blues of their decision in writing. The reason for Monaco pulling out was due to the French club successfully renegotiating the deal to sell Folarin Balogun to Everton.
There was a full written club-to-club agreement with Chelsea to complete the Camara deal and the Premier League club feels Monaco have acted in an extraordinary and deeply unprofessional way. Chelsea had the option of pulling the plug on Fernandez to Man City after the Camara deal collapsed – but they stuck to their word and honoured their commitment to complete the deal.
Reunion at the Etihad Stadium
At Manchester City, Fernández is now reunited with his former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca, who left Chelsea in controversial fashion on New Year’s Day and moved to Etihad Stadium in June. The midfield acquisition arrives amid a wider squad overhaul that included four major departures: Tijjani Reijnders sold to Saudi Arabian club Al-Qadsiah for £52m, while Barcelona have signed Rodri for £65m, Newcastle have agreed a £52m deal to sign Nico Gonzalez and Bernardo Silva departed earlier in the summer before joining Real Madrid.

Believe me when I say that, from the moment I arrived, I became obsessed with winning and with bringing this club every trophy that its history deserves. We suffered, we cried, I got angry many times, but we also celebrated titles and unforgettable victories. Together, through the good times”
