China Focus: Chief scientist of China’s Tianwen-3 mission says search for signs of life is top goal

China’s Tianwen-3 mission, planned for launch around 2028, will prioritize the search for signs of ancient life on Mars as its top scientific goal. Chief scientist Hou Zengqian announced the update at the 2026 International Deep Space Exploration Conference in Hefei, noting the robotic mission aims to return Martian samples to Earth around 2031.

China is accelerating preparations for its most ambitious planetary endeavor yet. The Tianwen-3 mission has officially entered the prototype development phase, according to mission leadership speaking on the sidelines of the 2026 International Conference on Deep Space Exploration in Hefei, Anhui province. Unlike previous NASA efforts that relied on multi-stage retrievals, this robotic undertaking is designed to drill beneath the Martian surface, collect pristine samples, and bring them directly back to Earth in a single continuous mission.

Targeting Biosignatures and Past Habitability on Mars

Scientists have placed the search for potential bio-signatures at the very top of the mission’s scientific agenda. Ample evidence demonstrates that early Mars featured key conditions for a habitable environment, including liquid water, a denser atmosphere, and a global magnetic field.

Beyond searching for life, the mission will investigate Mars’ internal structure, atmospheric evolution, and geological changes. Hou Zengqian noted that these research topics remain deeply interconnected because life depends on habitable environments shaped by long-term planetary evolution.

Spacecraft Architecture and Landing Site Selection

Executing an unprecedented sample-return operation requires complex engineering. According to the China National Space Administration, the Tianwen-3 probe will utilize five distinct components: a lander, an ascender, a service capsule, an orbiter, and a reentry module. Two Long March 5 heavy-lift carrier rockets will launch the spacecraft from the Wenchang Space Launch Center in Hainan province.

To maximize the scientific value of the returned material, the engineering team has preliminarily identified eight candidate landing sites based on geological age, water activity history, and the potential to preserve biosignatures. Mission planners expect to finalize the official landing site by the end of 2026. The probe aims to drill as deep as two meters below the Martian surface, harvesting subsurface samples protected from radiation, weathering, and oxidation.

Planetary Protection and Contamination Controls

Preventing cross-contamination between Earth and Mars remains a paramount challenge for the project. China plans to construct what the chief scientist described as the world’s first dedicated planetary protection laboratory. This facility will serve a dual purpose: safeguarding Mars from terrestrial microbes and safely isolating returned Martian samples to prevent any accidental exposure on Earth.

Simultaneously, researchers across the country are developing high-fidelity methodologies to identify tiny amounts of life-related materials within the samples once they arrive.

International Cooperation and Geological Mapping Progress

Parallel to hardware development, scientific teams are advancing a comprehensive new-generation geological map of the entire Mars. Integrating data from the Tianwen-1 mission alongside international sources, the project applies artificial intelligence to spectroscopy, radar, and imagery data. Version 1.0 of the 1:5 million scale map is scheduled for completion around the end of 2028.

The Deep Space Exploration Laboratory also underscored the mission’s international dimensions during the Hefei conference by unveiling joint laboratories established with the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand and the Astronomical Observatory of Belgrade in Serbia. If technical milestones and launch preparations stay on schedule, Tianwen-3 will complete its sample collection and return to Earth around 2031.
