Record Rainfalls and Landslide Emergencies in Kyushu
The storm’s unpredictable path has caused persistent downpours across southern Japan, with consecutive rainbands forming over the Tanegashima and Yakushima regions between late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning. In the town of Yakushima, a 24-hour precipitation total reached 490.5 mm, marking the highest observation in local recorded history. The extreme volume prompted authorities to issue a temporary Level 5 emergency landslide warning for the area.
Infrastructure damage has followed the relentless water. Asphalt has torn away from roads in Yakushima, and localized water outages have left residents without service. Forecasters warn that intermittent heavy rain will persist, with additional 24-hour rainfall totals projected to reach up to 200 mm in Miyazaki Prefecture and 150 mm in Kagoshima Prefecture.
Kanto and Tokai Regions Face Severe Weather Threats
The weather system’s expansion puts eastern and central Japan on high alert. Warning-level rainfall is expected to strike the Kanto region from Sunday night into Monday, followed by similar severe conditions across the Tokai and Kinki regions on Monday.
Forecasters anticipate that a northward-moving autumn rain front will direct intense rain clouds over densely populated areas just as commuters head out.
