Israeli strikes kill four in southern Lebanon

Israeli airstrikes killed at least four people and wounded 20 others across southern Lebanon on Sunday, September 6, 2026, destroying a hospital in Nabatieh al-Fawqa. The fresh bombardment follows a reported drone launch toward Israeli forces, intensifying a persistent cross-border conflict despite a June ceasefire framework.

Ghandour Hospital Destroyed in Nabatieh al-Fawqa Strikes

Israeli airstrikes completely destroyed Ghandour Hospital in the southern Lebanese town of Nabatieh al-Fawqa on Sunday, according to the country’s Health Ministry. The Israeli airstrikes carried out this morning completely destroyed Ghandour Hospital in Nabatieh al-Fawqa, a ministry statement said. The facility had already ceased operations roughly two months prior due to intensified Israeli attacks on Nabatieh and surrounding areas.

During previous rounds of escalation, the facility played a key role by providing health services to residents and serving for an extended period as a shelter for displaced people. The ministry condemned the strike as an attack compounding losses suffered by Lebanon’s health sector amid ongoing Israeli attacks, describing the hospital destruction as another violation of protection afforded to medical facilities under international humanitarian law.

According to the ministry, 17 hospitals across Lebanon have been damaged by Israeli strikes since March 2, while three hospitals in southern Lebanon have been put out of service. Israeli attacks on southern Lebanon have intensified in recent days after the Israeli army claimed it intercepted a drone allegedly launched by Hezbollah toward its forces operating in what Tel Aviv calls a “security zone” in southern Lebanon.

According to Lebanese authorities, Israeli attacks since March 2 have killed 4,358 people and injured 12,359 others, while displacing more than 1 million people. Lebanese authorities also state that the attacks have killed more than 4,300 people overall. Four people were killed and 23 injured across southern Lebanon on Friday, the health ministry said on Saturday, in Israeli strikes launched without evacuation warnings, which the Israeli military said hit Hezbollah weapons storage facilities. On Sunday, a preliminary toll from the ministry noted that strikes across several areas of Nabatieh district—including Nabatieh al-Fawqa, the Al-Rahibat neighborhood of Nabatieh city, Arab Salim, and Kfar Remman—killed four people and injured 20 others.

Southern Lebanese Towns Hit by Sunday Air Raids

The destruction of the hospital came amid a broader wave of Sunday morning air raids that began at dawn. Lebanon’s official National News Agency (NNA) reported strikes hitting Nabatieh, Arab Salim, Nabatieh al-Fawqa, and Kfar Reman.

In Arab Salim, two women were killed and six people were wounded in an air attack after Israeli forces issued a forced displacement order for a building in the town, NNA reported. Lebanon’s Health Ministry reported that at least two people were killed in an Israeli air strike on Nabatieh al-Fawqa. An air strike on Nabatieh city also destroyed a historical building owned by the brother of a Lebanese member of parliament, damaging several buildings nearby, and another strike hit the Sayyida Masouma Garden in the city, destroying what remained of the municipal park after it was hit the previous day. In Kfar Reman, an air attack destroyed the home of the town’s late former mayor, while five people were treated in Nabatieh hospitals and discharged.

The Israeli military stated that its targets included what it described as Hezbollah weapons storage facilities and a command centre inside a building previously used as a hospital, using precision munitions and aerial surveillance to mitigate civilian harm. Israel described the drone launch towards its forces in southern Lebanon as a blatant violation by the Lebanese armed group.

Diplomatic Fallout and Ongoing Ceasefire Pressures

President Aoun held the Israeli side fully responsible for this ongoing escalation, calling on the United States and the international community to take immediate action to stop these violations and hold the perpetrators accountable.

Hezbollah condemned Israel’s campaign, which it said was taking place amid complete international silence and blatant American complicity. The group reiterated its rejection of Beirut’s fruitless direct negotiations with Israel, asserting that Israel’s continued escalation aimed to pressure the Lebanese government, which has been engaged in direct talks with Israel under U.S. auspices—negotiations that the Iran-backed group has rejected.

Amid these developments, Israel is also considering pulling its troops occupying Lebanese territory closer to the Israeli border. Israeli public broadcaster Kan, citing security sources, reported that the military was preparing to scale back its presence and reposition three to four kilometres closer to the Israeli border, along a new “Grey Linewhere outposts would be built, pulling troops back from parts of theYellow Line” that extends north of the Litani River, though the plan has not been approved by Israel’s political leadership and the handover of territory to the Lebanese army remains unresolved.
