Rye Lane in Peckham is completely closed to vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists due to a dangerous structure at the former Tower Cinema Gateway site.
According to Southwark Council, the closure affects Rye Lane to all vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists in the interest of public safety.
Tower Cinema Gateway Structure Prompts Emergency Closure
According to Southwark Council, the landmark was initially designed in 1914, and its distinctive tower stands as a architectural remnant from an earlier era after the main venue closed permanently in 1956. The auditorium itself was eventually demolished and replaced by the Choumert Grove Car Park, which is operated by Southwark Council, leaving the remaining tower structure to serve as an entranceway from the High Street.
Reports of a large police presence at the dangerous building emerged just after 10pm on Thursday, September 3, according to MyLondon. The Metropolitan Police deployed officers to the scene to restrict public access, stopping both traffic and pedestrians from entering the cordoned zone.
Complex Scaffolding Works Expected to Last At Least a Week
Southwark Council is currently collaborating with contractors to install specialized scaffold support around the aging structure to stabilize it. Municipal officials stated that this is a complex job and is expected to take at least a week
. Both the road and surrounding footways will remain shut until this stabilization work is fully finished and authorities confirm the area is safe for public use.
While structural assessments take place to ensure road users can safely return, local leaders have deployed wardens and the Night Time Uniformed Patrol Service (NTUPS) to maintain site security and reassure residents. Marshals are also scheduled to assist local delivery drivers in the morning hours.
Widespread Transit Disruptions and Resident Support
Transport for London has arranged comprehensive bus diversions, affecting multiple routes that normally traverse Rye Lane. According to Southwark Council, bus routes 36, 136, 171, 436, N89, N136 and N171 towards Camberwell
are currently diverting via Peckham High Road.

In addition to managing traffic diversions, municipal authorities are actively assisting residents impacted by the emergency safety perimeter. The council is providing controlled access for individuals to retrieve essential belongings from their properties, alongside offering accommodation support where necessary.
