Hideo Kojima’s Physint Game Moves to Xbox From PlayStation

Hideo Kojima’s action-espionage game Physint will now be published by Microsoft’s Xbox instead of Sony’s PlayStation, after PlayStation unexpectedly canceled the project in mid-June. Kojima Productions spent three months searching for a new partner before teaming up with Xbox to keep the genre-defining title alive.

PlayStation Cancels Physint and Kojima Searches for a New Home

The action-espionage project Physint faced a sudden roadblock in mid-June when PlayStation Studios unexpectedly notified Kojima Productions that it was dropping the game. When the title was first unveiled during a PlayStation State of Play broadcast, PlayStation Studios boss Hermen Hulst shook Kojima’s hand on stage and promised full support from Sony’s technological innovations. But that partnership dissolved behind the scenes, prompting a frantic three-month search to keep the project alive.

“As confirmed earlier through our official channels, in mid-June of this year, we unexpectedly received notice from PlayStation Studios that they would cancel the PHYSINT project. PHYSINT is an important project both to me personally and to KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS. Determined to keep the project alive, we have spent the last three months searching tirelessly for a new partner.”

PlayStation later issued a formal statement on social media confirming the split. The company noted that it had made the difficult decision to step away from collaborating with Kojima Productions on its project Physint, while emphasizing that its three-decade creative relationship with the studio remains strong.

For Microsoft, landing the publishing contract for Physint marks a significant industry coup, effectively shifting a major AAA title away from its chief console rival.

Discussions between Kojima and Microsoft accelerated after Asha Sharma took over as Xbox CEO earlier in the year, replacing the retiring Phil Spencer. Sharma has prioritized high-profile partnerships and console exclusives as part of a broader business reset.

“Creators have choices about where and how they bring their ideas to life. We’re honored that Kojima-san has chosen Xbox to work with Kojima Productions on Physint. His ambition to challenge conventions reflects the kind of creativity we want to support at Xbox.”

Expanding Beyond Gaming Into Film and Television

The new agreement between Microsoft and Kojima Productions is not restricted to interactive software. According to Xbox Wire announcements, the partnership extends into transmedia storytelling, with both entities collaborating across film and television projects to bring fresh narratives to broader audiences.

This transmedia expansion runs parallel to Kojima’s existing projects. Xbox is already slated to publish Kojima Productions’ upcoming horror game OD, which is being developed in collaboration with filmmaker Jordan Peele and was explicitly confirmed to remain safe from recent internal staff reductions and project cancellations at Microsoft. Meanwhile, Physint is positioned as the next major release following OD.

What Next for the Next-Generation Action-Espionage Title

“Of course, it is an interactive game, but it is also a movie at the same time. It is a completely new ‘Action Espionage’ for the next-generation. It will be created using cutting-edge technology and the best talents from around the world, both from film and video games.”

For Xbox, the partnership provides a major anchor to build visibility in international markets like Japan while expanding Microsoft’s creative footprint across multiple entertainment mediums.
