Valencia CF has pulled the plug on its leadership structure after a disastrous opening stretch in La Liga. The club dismissed manager Carlos Corberan and CEO of Football Ron Gourlay alongside their respective backroom and executive staffs, triggering an immediate overhaul at Mestalla.
The decisions arrive with Valencia sitting rock-bottom in the league table, having managed only a single point from their opening five fixtures. That dismal run ignited mounting dissatisfaction among supporters who watched the team absorb a heavy 5-0 defeat against Barcelona just weeks ago.
The End of Corberan’s Tenure at Mestalla
Corberan’s exit closes a turbulent chapter that began when Valencia appointed the 43-year-old in December 2024 from Championship side West Bromwich Albion. He initially inherited a squad sitting second-bottom and steered them to a respectable 12th-place finish, followed by a ninth-place finish last season.
Despite those mid-table finishes, persistent criticism of his tactical style drove open calls for his departure during home matches. Over 72 official games in charge, Corberan recorded 28 wins and 26 defeats before the board finally cut ties. His departure makes his eventual successor the 18th permanent head coach hired by Valencia since 2012.
Executive Exodus and Gourlay’s Departed Team
Ron Gourlay joined the club following a stint as chief executive at Chelsea and a prior working relationship with Corberan at West Bromwich Albion. Gourlay faced intense scrutiny alongside the manager, leading to the termination of his entire executive team.
The club confirmed that Gourlay’s close associates—Lisandro Isei, Hans Gillhaus, Andres Zamora, and Malek Shafei—will also depart immediately. Valencia framed the sweeping clear-out as a necessary reset.
The board added that it remains committed to building a stable, competitive, and sustainable project, promising an update on the newly configured sporting department shortly.
