Teen dead, two injured in Portland crash

A 13-year-old boy died and two other teens sustained serious injuries after being struck by a vehicle on Warren Avenue in Portland, Maine, on Saturday night, according to local police. The driver, a 48-year-old Portland resident, stayed at the scene, cooperated with investigators, and was hospitalized for evaluation.

A Saturday night motor vehicle crash on Warren Avenue in Portland left a 13-year-old boy dead and two other teenagers hospitalized with serious injuries. Portland police reported that the incident occurred around 8:46 p.m. near the Interstate 95 overpass.

Preliminary investigations indicate that a group of teenage boys was walking on the north side of Warren Avenue toward Riverside Street when they entered the roadway abruptly. A vehicle traveling in the same direction, driven by a 48-year-old man from Portland, struck three members of the group.

Victim Status and Medical Response at Maine Medical Center

The 13-year-old boy died at the scene. Two other boys, aged 14 and 15, were struck alongside him and transported by ambulance to Maine Medical Center.

Both surviving teens suffered serious injuries but are expected to survive. Other youths walking in the group were uninjured in the collision.

The driver of the vehicle also sustained injuries in the crash. He was taken to Maine Medical Center for evaluation and is expected to be OK.

School Community Impact and Ongoing Investigation

The superintendent of Portland Public Schools confirmed that the group involved included three students from Deering High School, though the student who died was a peer from a neighboring community. School support teams, including counselors and social work providers, were scheduled to be available to support affected students.

Portland police were assisted at the scene by the Portland Fire Department, the Cumberland County District Attorney’s Office, and the Portland Public Schools superintendent’s office. Warren Avenue remained closed in the area of the crash for about five hours.

Authorities stated that the driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. No charges have been filed at this time, and the crash investigation remains active.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or has surveillance, dashcam, doorbell, or other video footage from the area to contact investigators at 207-874-8575.
