Former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan has been appointed head coach of the Chennai Super Kings, stepping into the role following Stephen Fleming’s exit as CSK coach. The franchise confirmed the appointment, noting that former captain MS Dhoni played a central role in selecting his long-time teammate to lead the team.
The Chennai Super Kings have turned to a familiar face from India’s cricketing past to steady their dugout. Zaheer Khan, who played a fundamental role in India’s success during the 2000s and had a joint-highest tally of 21 wickets in the 2011 ODI World Cup alongside Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi, takes over a franchise that has struggled to hit its customary heights over the last three seasons, failing to make the playoffs each time.
MS Dhoni and the Decision Behind Zaheer Khan’s Appointment
Following Stephen Fleming’s departure due to commitments to England’s red-ball team, there was considerable speculation over his successor, and the management left the decision largely to Dhoni. Ultimately, the management entrusted MS Dhoni, along with captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and other members of the cricket committee, with steering the recruitment process to conclude that Zaheer is the best man for the job. CSK managing director Kasi Viswanathan detailed the reasoning behind the choice, emphasizing the alignment between the team’s leadership and the newly appointed coach.

Viswanathan highlighted Zaheer’s extensive background in mentoring younger players and his historical significance to Indian cricket during the 2000s. Dhoni’s professional trust in the former left-arm pacer dates back years, famously referring to him as the Sachin Tendulkar of bowling during India’s difficult 2012 World T20 campaign in Sri Lanka.
Coaching Experience and Franchise Expectations
Zaheer brings a substantial coaching resume to Chennai. The now 47-year-old previously served as the Director of Cricket Operations for the Mumbai Indians starting in 2018, and he did a commendable job as MI then went on to win 2 consecutive Titles in 2019 and 2020. During that period, he was responsible for nurturing young talents like Tilak Varma, Dewald Brevis, and Ishan Kishan during his Mumbai Indians tenure. He then joined the Lucknow Supergiants as their Team mentor for the 2024-2025 season, working very closely with the coaching unit of the Supergiants.
For CSK, the immediate task involves shoring up a pace-bowling unit that has struggled lately, particularly at the death. Franchise leadership noted that Zaheer’s mastery of reverse swing and tactical fast-bowling mentorship directly address those on-field vulnerabilities.

Player Backgrounds and Franchise Legacy
During his playing career, Zaheer represented three IPL franchises (RCB, MI and DD) before concluding his IPL playing days in 2017 for the Delhi Capitals taking 10 wickets in 11 innings. Internationally, he has 610 International wickets to his name and has played over 300 matches, including ODIs, T20Is, and Tests, alongside his memorable opening spell of 5-3-6-1 in the final against Sri Lanka at the Wankhede during the 2011 World Cup where he kept the economy rate at just 4.83.
Upon taking the position, Zaheer expressed enthusiasm for joining a legacy franchise with such a rich history that he frequently contested as an active player.
