A person is in a critical condition in Christchurch Hospital following a late-night incident on Tunnel Road. Police and emergency services responded to the scene near the Lyttelton Tunnel after midnight on Saturday, where initial indications suggest the individual fell from a moving vehicle.
Emergency Response on Tunnel Road and Hospitalization
Emergency crews rushed to Tunnel Road in Heathcote Valley late Saturday night after receiving urgent notifications of a motor vehicle incident. St John dispatched two rapid response units, an operations manager, and an ambulance following the initial 11.32pm notification.
Police officers arrived at the scene shortly afterward at approximately 11.40pm. Medical personnel treated the patient on site before transporting them to Christchurch Public Hospital in a critical condition. Medical responders were alerted to a traffic crash on Tunnel Road in Heathcote Valley at 11.32pm, according to information provided to chrislynchmedia.com by a St John representative. Prior to the emergency response, witnesses and a video posted to social media captured unusual activity involving a vehicle moving through the area. Video captured by Chris Lynch Media shows a man standing on the back of a moving van as it drove through Lyttelton before turning and travelling towards the tunnel.
An observer reported seeing an individual hanging onto the exterior of a van shortly prior to the discovery of a critically injured person on Tunnel Road late on Saturday night. The observer shared with chrislynchmedia.com that they spotted the individual attached to the back of the van within Lyttelton, while a nearby group of companions displayed escalating anxiety. The observer noted that the group started screaming for the individual to exit the automobile as it drew near a stop sign. They were freaking out and yelling for someone to get the car to follow him,

Driving through the Lyttelton Tunnel shortly afterwards, the observer reached the 100 kilometre an hour zone on Tunnel Road and encountered multiple cars with their warning lights activated alongside a group assembled by the roadside. Pulling over to offer assistance, they were informed that medical help was already en route. The observer suspected the individual could have stayed on top of the automobile throughout a significant portion of the high speed zone prior to tumbling off.
Spanning nearly 2km through the Port Hills, the Lyttelton Tunnel links Christchurch with Lyttelton and accommodates a daily traffic volume exceeding 10,000 vehicles.
Police Investigation and Serious Crash Unit Examination
Police confirmed that the Serious Crash Unit examined the scene on Tunnel Road following the arrival of emergency responders, and police enquiries are continuing.
