Huawei Technologies is marking a significant shift in its hardware strategy, rolling out a new generation of advanced processors based on its self-developed Tau Scaling Law. This technological push is a direct response to stringent US export curbs, which have limited the Chinese tech giant’s access to the newest manufacturing tools. By rewiring its smartphone business to rely on home-grown technology, Huawei aims to overcome these supply constraints by squeezing more power out of what China can currently produce.
Huawei Advances LogicFolding Chip Technology with Mate XT 2 and Mate 90 Series
The centerpiece of this strategy is the LogicFolding architecture. According to reports, this 3D-style rewiring approach allows for denser circuitry packing than a traditional flat layout. This innovation is now being integrated into the newly released Mate 90 smartphone series and the HUAWEI Mate XT 2 | ULTIMATE DESIGN.

Commercial Launch of the Mate XT 2
On September 7, 2026, Huawei officially unveiled the HUAWEI Mate XT 2 | ULTIMATE DESIGN in Guangzhou, China. As the first smartphone to feature the Kirin 9050 Pro chip, the device marks the official entry of the LogicFolding Tau (τ) chip into mass commercialization. Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, Huawei consumer business chief Richard Yu Chengdong confirmed that the company had already shipped approximately 100,000 units of the trifold phone since its release on September 12. Huawei anticipates that the model will surpass 1 million in total sales, with plans to launch the handset in markets across the Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, and potentially Europe.
Design and Technical Innovation
The Mate XT 2 debuts with a wing-like tri-fold design that opens from both sides. The aesthetic design incorporates a cloud pattern created using Brocade Cloud craftsmanship, available in Purple, White, and Black. The camera ring, known as the Star Diamond Glow, is crafted from Yttrium Crystal, fired at 1,800°C, and polished into 33 star diamond facets. Durability is managed by the Xuanwu Ultra-Durable Tri-Fold Architecture, which includes an Advanced Precision Hinge System 2.0 utilizing a 5-curved arm structure. The device is the first tri-fold phone to support IP58/59 dust and water resistance, with a cover screen protected by Xuanwu Kunlun Glass.
Performance and AI Capabilities
The Kirin 9050 Pro chip delivers a reported 42% improvement in overall device performance compared to the previous generation through deep collaboration between hardware, software, chips, and cloud. The LinxiCore CPU and HUAWEI Ark Engine support faster loading of large files, while the Maleoon GPU features doubled computing units and cache, enabling 50 MRPS hardware-level real-time ray tracing for gaming. The HUAWEI Da Vinci Architecture NPU supports on-device AI, natively enabling the Pangu 30B-A2B MoE LLM for features like AI-assisted album management with Celia.
Connectivity is supported by 32 distributed antennas, ensuring faster 5A connectivity alongside Tiantong satellite communication and Beidou satellite messaging. Security is handled by a Mobile Security Processor and an independent security chip that enables post-quantum cryptography algorithm detection, having passed EAL5+ CCRC security certification.
Privacy and Future Outlook
The device introduces the industry’s first foldable Smart Shield Privacy Screen, which uses an independent dual-pixel design to maintain resolution in Privacy mode. This mode can be activated via double-tapping the cover screen or using the Smart controls button. As Huawei continues to manage the tight supply of advanced semiconductors, the Mate 90 series and the Mate XT 2 serve as a stress test for the company’s ability to maintain high-end performance in the face of international trade restrictions.
