Nearly a year after making history as the first Tanzanian athlete to secure a World Athletics Championships title, 33-year-old Simbu joins a competitive men’s field at the 2026 Sydney Marathon, following his second consecutive runner-up finish at the Boston Marathon. The two-time Olympian will be hoping for a strong first-time performance in Sydney. In order to win, Simbu will need to withstand the challenge of his fellow East African runners, led by Lemma, who is looking to get back to winning ways after his most recent Major victory came in Boston in 2024.
Star-Studded Elite Fields and Marathon Debuts in Sydney
The Sydney course is also attracting high-profile debutants and Olympic royalty. Hagos Gebrhiwet, the second fastest 5000m runner in history, is another Ethiopian to keep a close eye on, after picking Sydney as the course for his marathon debut. Vincent Kipkemoi Ngetich, who placed second behind his Kenyan compatriot Eliud Kipchoge when the marathon superstar set the world record at the 2023 Berlin Marathon, will also race for the first time on Australian soil.
On the women’s side, Jepchirchir – the first athlete to win an Olympic title, Boston Marathon and New York City Marathon – will test her form in the women’s race after missing the 2026 London Marathon due to a stress fracture. A proven championship racer, the Kenyan will be targeting a fifth Marathon Major podium finish in a race that will also feature Rio 2016 5000m champion Vivian Cheruiyot. Sydney will mark the 42-year-old’s third marathon in as many years, since returning to road racing in 2023 after a four-year break. Also in the field is fellow Kenyan Irine Cheptai, the former track specialist who has impressed since making the transition to the marathon. She announced her arrival with victory on her marathon debut in Hamburg in 2024, and has continued to establish herself as one of Kenya’s rising stars over the distance.

City of Sydney businesses in the city centre, Pyrmont, Darlinghurst, Surry Hills and Paddington, the suburbs along the route, can trade from 4am, giving participants, supporters and workers more opportunities to grab a coffee, breakfast or other essentials before and during the race.
NSW Government Vibrancy Reforms Allow Extended Trading
There’s no need to apply for permission to open earlier. Shops, restaurants, cafés, takeaway food and drink outlets, and community and entertainment facilities can automatically take advantage of the extended trading hours. Businesses already permitted to trade beyond these hours can continue to do so. The Sydney Marathon attracts more than 50,000 participants and thousands of spectators, creating a significant boost for local businesses and the visitor economy. Extended trading hours are available under the NSW Government’s vibrancy reforms, which allow councils to declare special events and remove previous restrictions on trading hours. The changes reduce red tape and give businesses greater flexibility to respond to customer demand during major events.
