3 students confirmed dead after being swept out to sea off southwestern Japan

Three students were confirmed dead following a tragedy off the coast of Kagoshima Prefecture in southwestern Japan. The Japan Coast Guard reported that four students were swept out to sea after two got into trouble while swimming, prompting a search.

The incident unfolded on the afternoon of August 28, 2026, in the waters off Ichikikushikino City, according to the Japan Coast Guard. Authorities confirmed that two students initially got into difficulty while in the sea near Terushima Beach. Two other students reportedly jumped from rocks into the rough water in an attempt to rescue them, but all four were swept offshore by high waves.

Identities of the Victims and Ongoing Search in Kagoshima Prefecture

Search operations over the weekend led to the recovery of several victims. Local media reports detailed that rescue teams found two of the students on Saturday morning. The Japan Coast Guard formally identified three of the victims as Haruki Shitaebisu, 17, his brother Kensei, 13, and Takahiro Takemoto, 14, though varying updates from news outlets noted that the search for certain individuals continued as officials worked to confirm identities.

While regional reporting confirmed three fatalities on August 29, accounts differed slightly on the exact timing of body recoveries versus ongoing rescue operations. Outlets including Xinhua initially verified two deaths on Saturday morning while rescue efforts for missing participants remained active.

Rescue Efforts and Dangerous Sea Conditions

Out of the four students swept away from the rocks, swift intervention saved one life. A 12-year-old junior high school boy was rescued from the water shortly after being pulled offshore, while a fifth student who had remained on shore successfully called for emergency help. A local fishery cooperative official noted that waves were high at the time of the incident.

Confusion initially surrounded the regulatory status of the coastline. The coast guard initially stated that the area was off-limits for swimming, but corrected the information the following day to clarify that swimming is permitted at the location.
