Booster B1085 Completes Its 18th Flight

The heavy lifting for Tuesday’s mission fell to a seasoned Falcon 9 first-stage booster designated B1085. About 8.5 minutes after clearing the Florida pad at 11:58 a.m. EDT (1558 GMT), the booster executed a pinpoint landing in the Atlantic Ocean atop the SpaceX droneship A Shortfall of Gravitas. It marked the 18th flight for B1085.

This specific rocket body carries a notably versatile flight history. Beyond its heavy diet of Starlink deployments, B1085 previously lofted the Crew-9 astronaut mission to the International Space Station in September 2024 and launched the Fram2 mission six months later as detailed by Space. Tuesday’s mission also represented the 93rd Falcon 9 launch of the calendar year, with 72 of those flights dedicated to Starlink expansion.

Tracking the Constellation Growth in Low-Earth Orbit

Following stage separation, the Falcon 9 upper stage continued hauling the 29 spacecraft toward LEO, with deployment scheduled for 64 minutes after liftoff. Once deployed and in their orbit, they will provide internet service to many parts of Earth.

The sheer scale of the constellation continues to draw close monitoring from astronomers and astrophysicists. Dr. Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics tracks the network closely; before Tuesday’s launch, McDowell documented 10,939 total Starlink satellites in orbit, with 9,209 operating in their active operational orbits according to data cited by Spectrum News 13. McDowell’s broader tracking places the active count above 10,900.

Future Megaconstellation Plans on the Horizon

Tuesday’s flight is just a stepping stone in a much larger industrial roadmap. SpaceX maintains ambitions to scale its capabilities radically, eyeing a future fleet of 100,000 larger Starlink V3 satellites. Elon Musk has also voiced ambitions to launch a million AI data center satellites into Earth orbit as reported by Space.
