U2 return to old school for surprise gig 50 years after forming

Fifty years to the day after a teenage Larry Mullen Jr. pinned a handwritten note to a school notice board seeking musicians, U2 staged an impromptu concert in the Dublin schoolyard. The 30-minute set brought students crowding to windows, filled nearby rooftops with onlookers, and included a seven-song performance featuring classic tracks and new material.

Returning to the Mount Temple Schoolyard Where It All Began

Excitement had built throughout the week at Mount Temple Comprehensive School as rumors circulated about a surprise visit. When the band took to the schoolyard, they played for hundreds of students, alongside construction crews watching from upper floors of nearby buildings.

The band originally formed after Mullen posted his note on September 25, 1976, and the musicians gathered at his family home in Artane. Originally called Feedback, the lineup featured singer Paul Hewson, known as Bono, guitarist David Evans, a.k.a. The Edge, and bassist Adam Clayton. It took a couple of years to settle on the name U2, and their debut album, Boy, did not drop until 1980.

Bono joked with the students while pointing toward the science classrooms, later thanking his captive audience with the quip that they had nowhere else to go. As he launched into Vertigo, he counted down with uno, dos, tres, catorce and advised pupils, If you’re taking Spanish lessons, don’t take them from me.

Reflections on Vulnerability and Five Decades of Music

For the band members, walking the halls brought back vivid memories of their youth. Clayton reflected on the emotional weight of standing in the schoolyard five decades later, recalling how he had felt as a teenager.

I was reminded looking out there of just how kind of lost and kind of vulnerable I felt as a kid. And I was really happy that 50 years later I felt a lot better.

The Edge described the return as extraordinary and very moving, joking that the sound quality and his tuning were better this time around. Mullen expressed amazement that the band members are still performing together after half a century, noting a shared understanding between the band and the current student body.

Collaborating with Music Generation and Debuting New Material

The anniversary celebration highlighted educational outreach alongside nostalgia. Thirty-two student musicians from Music Generation joined U2 on stage to perform the hit song One. Clayton pointed to the music education program as the achievement the band is most proud of, noting it currently supports 115,000 music lessons each week.

The surprise gig also served as part of a promotional push for the band’s forthcoming album, Carnaval De Luz, slated for release on November 13 as their first album of new material in nine years. During the set, U2 gave their first live performance of the new single Silencio, which Bono described as having a punk rock spirit.

Carnaval De Luz also features a duet between Bono and Dolly Parton, who died of cancer last month. Following their school performance, the band made a secondary appearance on a balcony along Grafton Street in central Dublin, playing to a gathered crowd of fans before concluding the day’s celebrations.
