Parents who run with strollers experience a 55 percent lower injury rate per 1,000 miles than non-stroller runners, according to a study published on August 12, 2026, in the journal PLOS One. Researchers at Penn State Berks found that pushing a stroller alters running biomechanics, reducing vertical force on weight-bearing joints.

Anyone who has pushed a stroller over cracked pavement or up a steep hill knows the activity feels cumbersome and physically demanding. Common assumption dictates that adding extra weight and resistance to a workout would strain the body further. Instead, a new study reveals the exact opposite for parents who run with children.

Penn State Berks Study Details Stroller Running Injury Rates

The study tracked self-reported running mileage and injuries during the first three years of parenthood, comparing parents who regularly incorporated a stroller with those who continued running without one. Among 196 stroller runners and 53 non-stroller runners included in the final data analysis, 30 percent of runners without a stroller reported an overuse injury. By comparison, only 19 percent of those in the stroller running group reported similar issues, according to the research.

When adjusting for distance, the difference remains pronounced. The study, published in PLOS One, found that for every 1,000 miles run, parents pushing strollers experienced a 55 percent lower injury rate than their stroller-free counterparts. Non-stroller runners were also more likely to experience multiple injuries during the same three-year window.

Biomechanics and Force Distribution on Joints

The protective effect likely stems from how holding onto a stroller shifts physical mechanics. Senior author Allison Altman-Singles explained the mechanical shift during movement.

Altman-Singles noted that this change in biomechanics may relieve stress on weight-bearing joints, which helps explain the drop in common running injuries, particularly knee pain. Previous research led by Altman-Singles demonstrated that running with a stroller decreases the impact of each step. Stroller runners tend to adopt shorter strides, lean forward more, twist less through the torso, and run slower. Pushing down on the handlebars helps transfer force away from the legs, while maintaining a consistent cadence and regulated pace also contributes to lower injury risk.

Mileage Maintenance During Early Parenthood

Beyond protecting joints, the equipment provides a practical logistical advantage during a notoriously difficult phase for maintaining fitness. Stroller use peaked when children were between six months and three years old. Parents with children aged 6 to 12 months logged 34 percent more miles than runners who did not use a stroller.

Despite the overall reduction in overuse injuries, certain conditions affected both groups equally. Plantar fasciitis, an inflammation of the connective tissue along the bottom of the foot, emerged as the most commonly reported condition in both cohorts. It accounted for 15 percent of injuries in the stroller-running group and 16 percent among non-stroller runners. Researchers suggested this specific foot strain may connect to physiological shifts, hormonal changes, and weight gain during pregnancy and the postpartum period rather than the act of running itself.

While the retrospective survey relied on self-reported data and cannot definitively prove causation, authors noted the findings offer reassurance for parents aiming to preserve their training routines.
