September warmth is drawing to a close across much of the UK as an approaching Atlantic weather front brings wind and rain. Tuesday marks the peak of the warm southerly winds, with temperatures reaching up to 26C in England and Wales before autumnal conditions take hold for the final days of the month.
A vast area of low pressure sitting over the Atlantic is currently driving warm south to south-easterly winds across the United Kingdom. While the system delivers unseasonable warmth at the start of the week, it also carries a band of unsettled weather that will introduce wetter and windier conditions to many regions.
Following a summer that set records for heat, September has maintained notably high temperatures across large parts of the country. Yet that warmth has created a sharp geographic divide, pitting drought-affected central, southern, and eastern territories against soaked western regions.
Temperature Peaks and Regional Rain Disparities Across the UK
Tuesday is shaping up to be the warmest day of the week. Temperatures in Scotland and Northern Ireland are projected to reach the high teens, while England and Wales could see readings climb anywhere from 20C to 26C. Yet the accompanying rain will miss the areas that need it most. Central, southern, and eastern England have experienced prolonged dry spells, leaving rainfall totals exceptionally low. Parts of north-east England have recorded some of the lowest precipitation levels for the month.
Conversely, western areas and Scotland have weathered repeated Atlantic storms. Locations such as Kirkwall and Prestwick have already accumulated nearly one-and-a-half times their typical September rainfall. In the Highlands, Achnagart has recorded rain on every single day for the past 27 days, demonstrating a severe meteorological contrast across the British Isles.
Weather Front Progression and Mid-Week Temperature Drop
The transition to autumnal weather begins in earnest as a weather front moves erratically eastwards on Wednesday. The system brings outbreaks of rain, featuring potential heavy and thundery downpours as it crosses the country. South-east England is expected to retain enough dry air to push temperatures into the mid-20s Celsius before the front arrives, but elsewhere, highs will settle between 14C and 20C.
Clearer skies, lighter winds, and cooler air following the rain will cause temperatures to plunge into single figures on Wednesday night. Eastern Scotland, particularly around the Grampians, could experience a touch of morning frost on the grass by Thursday.
Incoming High Pressure and Weekend Outlook
Calmer conditions are scheduled to return toward the end of the week. High pressure is expected to build by Thursday, bringing sunny and dry weather to most of England and Wales. At the same time, strengthening winds will increase cloud cover in the north-west, where gales are possible in coastal districts alongside rain reaching western Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Temperatures may recover slightly by Friday, with south-east England touching the mid-20s Celsius once more. Seasonal averages will dominate the weekend, though western regions can anticipate scattered showers on Saturday, followed by broader bands of rain sweeping across most areas by Sunday.
