Multiple people wounded in shooting at Virginia State University

Gun violence at colleges and universities in the United States is relatively common. The Gun Violence Archive, a nonpartisan national tracker, recorded 100 incidents where individuals were wounded or killed in shootings at higher education institutions in 2025, and recorded 75 shootings the previous year. The nonpartisan resource defines mass shootings as cases in which at least four victims are wounded or killed, and noted that as of Saturday morning, there had been nearly 300 mass shootings reported across the US so far for the year. One of the most high-profile attacks in recent years was in Virginia, when a gunman fatally shot 32 people and wounded 17 at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, also known as Virginia Tech, in 2007. Earlier this year, a man opened fire at a Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) group at Old Dominion University, killing an instructor and wounding two others. The US has perennially registered high numbers of mass shootings, with a considerable portion of those occurring at school and university campuses or activities, prompting calls for more substantial federal gun control, though Congress over the years has not implemented such restrictions.
