Israeli Airstrikes and Demolitions Target Southern Lebanon

The Israeli military conducted intensive airstrikes, artillery shelling, and structural demolitions across southern Lebanon, targeting regions including Tyre, Bint Jbeil, and Nabatieh. The escalation persists despite a framework agreement signed in June, driving mounting casualties and displacing numerous residents amidst an active regional campaign.

Southern Lebanon faces sustained military pressure as the Israeli military launched 60 distinct attacks in a single day, resulting in five deaths and multiple injuries across several southern districts. The ground and air operations continue a military campaign that began on March 2.

Operations have focused heavily on border communities, where troops have executed structural demolitions and controlled detonations inside towns such as Al-Taybeh and Bint Jbeil. Concurrently, Hezbollah responded with 17 military operations targeting Israeli positions, troop gatherings, and armored vehicles in the border area.

The day’s operations spanned multiple southern governorates, leaving widespread property damage. In the Tyre district, airstrikes struck towns including Deir Kifa, Majdal Zoun, and Al-Mansouri. The bombardment in Deir Kifa killed three people and injured a fourth, while other strikes impacted educational facilities and commercial areas.

Further inland within the Nabatieh district, air raids targeted Nabatieh al-Fawqa and Adshit, where one person was killed. A strike in Shukin destroyed a mixed commercial and residential complex, damaging dozens of nearby apartments and storefronts. In Bint Jbeil, strikes wounded a Lebanese Army officer and a soldier, while drone activity and artillery fire persisted.

Political and Strategic Drivers Behind the Ongoing Escalation

The intensification of hostilities occurs despite a framework agreement signed by Tel Aviv and Beirut mediated by the United States on June 26. That accord envisioned a phased Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon matched by Lebanese Army deployment and the disarmament of armed groups in the area. Israeli forces have continued operations up to 10 kilometers deep into Lebanese territory.

Analyzing the escalation, Antoine Shalhat, an expert on Israeli affairs, told Arab media that the intensified military actions are deliberate. Shalhat noted that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Security Minister Israel Katz have maintained that operations will persist regardless of the framework agreement, arguing that ongoing attacks from Hezbollah justify continued deployments to maintain a security zone intended to shield northern border settlements.

Shalhat added that the current military campaign runs parallel to political dynamics inside Israel, linking the escalation to upcoming political elections. According to this assessment, sustained military engagement serves as a central domestic political lever while negotiations proceed without territorial concessions.

Negotiation Tracks and Upcoming Diplomatic Contacts

The fieldwork coincides with preparations by Lebanese and Israeli delegations to resume the seventh round of US-backed negotiations in Rome. Negotiators aim to revive a diplomatic track that has faced repeated setbacks on the ground.
