Bonnie Tyler fans gather in Mumbles for singer’s procession

The singer, whose real name was Gaynor Sullivan according to one source and Gaynor Hopkins according to others, died unexpectedly on 8 July in Portugal at the age of 75.

Procession and Emotional Tributes in Swansea

As the hearse travelled along Newton Road toward her home in Llwynderw, the coffin was draped in the Welsh flag and accompanied by a framed photograph.

Among those in attendance was 18-year-old Carys Edwards, who described the singer as an inspiration to everybody and noted that Tyler always made sure to return to her fans in Wales. Other mourners travelled from as far away as Derby, Austria, and Germany to witness the procession.

Upcoming Memorial Service and Funeral Arrangements

A celebration of Tyler’s life is scheduled to take place at Swansea Minster (the Church of St Mary’s) on Monday at noon. While entry inside the service is restricted to those with personal invitations, the proceedings will be broadcast on a large screen in nearby St David’s Square for the public.

Following the service, the coffin will make a final journey through her home village of Skewen, where she grew up in a council house with five older siblings. A private gathering strictly for family and friends will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in support of two charities where Tyler served as a patron: Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital for Wales and Cerebral Palsy Cymru.

Global Musical Legacy and Career Highlights

Recognisable for her distinctive husky voice, Tyler achieved international fame during the 1980s. Her blockbuster hit Total Eclipse of the Heart shot to the top of the charts in both the UK and the US. The accompanying album, Faster Than the Speed of Night, was a major chart-topping success that earned the singer her only UK number one album.

Her extensive catalog of pop music hits also includes:

  • Total Eclipse of the Heart
  • Holding Out For a Hero (also referred to as I Need a Hero)
  • It’s a Heartache
  • If You Were a Woman (And I Was a Man)

Beyond her chart successes, Tyler represented the United Kingdom in the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest held in Malmö, Sweden, performing the song Believe in Me and finishing in 19th place.

Life Between Portugal and Wales

Tyler divided her time between Algarve in Portugal and a large Victorian house in Blackpill near Mumbles, overlooking Swansea Bay. Her passing followed health challenges earlier in the year, which included being treated in intensive care and placed in an induced coma following emergency intestinal surgery in May near her home in Faro.

At the time of her death, political figures and fellow entertainers paid tribute, with then prime minister Keir Starmer describing her as an iconic figure and one of Britain’s greatest recording artists, alongside tributes from Catherine Zeta-Jones and Cliff Richard. Reflecting on her roots in a previous interview, Tyler noted that despite her extraordinary career, she remained connected to her upbringing, writing in her memoir that she would always be that young girl from Wales dancing around the piano with her family.
