Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara 2: Zoya Akhtar confirms sequel development

Fifteen years after Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara charted a transformative road trip across Spain, director Zoya Akhtar has confirmed that a sequel is in the works alongside writer-producer Reema Kagti, though development remains strictly contingent on finding a genuine story for the returning characters. The original film, which released on July 15, 2011, followed the journey of three childhood friends—Arjun, Kabir, and Imraan—as they navigated personal fears, relationships, and existential questions while traveling through Spain.

Zoya Akhtar Confirms Sequel Development Alongside Reema Kagti

Fifteen years after the release of the cult-status 2011 road-trip drama, fans of Arjun, Kabir, and Imraan have finally received confirmation that a follow-up is under development. Director Zoya Akhtar revealed the project is moving forward while speaking with The Hollywood Reporter India, noting that writer-producer Reema Kagti is collaborating on the project. Reports earlier this year indicated that Akhtar had successfully locked a draft of the sequel, which is intended to reunite the film’s leading trio: Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, and Abhay Deol. Furthermore, Akhtar has revealed that Abhay Deol, who portrayed the character of Kabir, had previously worked out an entire story for the second installment.

“We are on it,” Zoya Akhtar confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter India.

Despite the confirmation, the filmmakers are intentionally avoiding a rushed production fueled purely by audience demand. Akhtar emphasized that the creative team wants to ensure any continuation respects the journey of the original characters. The central challenge lies in determining whether the filmmakers can authentically capture where these characters are today, fifteen years after their initial journey.

We don't know what will happen and what won't… if we will get to a place where it feels correct, in catching up with these characters today. But it will be nice, Akhtar added

Rumors of a reunion intensified throughout 2025 when original cast members Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, and Abhay Deol appeared together in an advertising campaign for the tourist destination Yas Island. The promotional spot leaned heavily into the vibes of the original film, evoking the camaraderie of the trio and leaving many viewers convinced that a teaser trailer had dropped.

The confusion triggered an intense wave of reactions online, ranging from immediate excitement to backlash when fans realized the footage belonged to a tourism ad rather than a cinematic sequel. Akhtar recalled the intensity of the public reaction, noting that she faced direct criticism in her private messages once the reality of the advertisement became clear.

Addressing Criticism Over Affluent Characters and Cinematic Privilege

As anticipation builds for the potential return of the trio, Akhtar also addressed long-standing critical commentary regarding her filmmaking choices. Both Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Dil Dhadakne Do have frequently faced scrutiny for focusing on the emotional trials of wealthy, privileged families navigating personal and relational crises.

Akhtar remains unfazed by the recurring criticism. She maintains that creators should retain the freedom to explore stories across diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, even if a specific narrative does not resonate with every audience member. In her view, financial comfort does not invalidate an individual’s emotional struggles; she believes that the complex relationships, insecurities, and personal dilemmas faced by her characters remain fertile and meaningful ground for storytelling regardless of their background.
