Winds Hamper Efforts to Extinguish Belgian Wildfire

Crews across eastern Belgium are locked in a relentless battle against a massive forest fire that has torn through approximately 3,000 hectares—an area roughly the size of 3,800 football pitches—of the High Fens nature reserve. The blaze, which broke out last Friday, has pushed local emergency services to their limits as shifting weather patterns and difficult terrain complicate tactical operations.

High Fens Nature Reserve Terrain and Weather Complicate Containment

On-site operations face severe obstacles due to the unique geography of the nature reserve, characterized by a fragile patchwork of heath, extensive peat bogs, and raised wooden boardwalks where heavy firefighting vehicles risk sinking into the ground. Regional government spokesperson Nicolas Yernaux noted that firefighters are struggling to tackle the flames at close range given the treacherous terrain.

Adding to the peril, meteorological conditions have proved volatile. Belgian Interior Minister Bernard Quintin told broadcaster RTL that relatively strong and shifting winds are completely unpredictable, shifting through a full 360-degrees in the course of a single day. These erratic gusts keep the direction of the fire’s spread fluid, pushing the blaze primarily toward the south-south-east by Sunday evening.

International Aerial Support and Local Solidarity Join the Fight

With ground access restricted, emergency teams have relied heavily on aerial assistance. Water-bombing aircraft from multiple European nations have been deployed to the High Fens nature reserve, including two water-scooping planes from Sweden and two firefighting helicopters from the Netherlands. Firefighters and equipment from Germany and Luxembourg are also stationed at the site, alongside six firefighting vehicles and a refuelling truck provided by the Belgian military.

However, low cloud cover and rain have repeatedly grounded these aircraft. There may be windows of opportunity this morning, but it may not be before tonight, Yernaux explained regarding the unpredictable flight conditions dictated by sustained winds blowing toward the German border.

On the ground, the disaster has generated a wave of community support. Local farmers have stepped in to assist emergency personnel, running shifts with tractors pulling water tankers from a nearby lake. We’ll keep going until the finish line.

This grassroots solidarity has faced occasional logistical hurdles. Authorities in Bütgenbach urged members of the public and independent farmers not to travel to the fire zone uncoordinated, noting that uncoordinated assistance had disrupted traffic and hampered the work of emergency services.

Evacuations, Air Quality Alerts, and the Path to Containment

The smoke hazard has forced protective measures across national borders. Around 600 people were evacuated from two Belgian municipalities over the weekend, and residents of the German border town of Monschau faced evacuation orders due to heavy smoke. Meanwhile, authorities in Monschau reported no indications that the blaze would spread into Germany. A thick plume of yellowish smoke has drifted as far as eastern France, prompting local authorities there to issue an air-pollution alert.

Despite the adversity, firefighters made a critical push to link the eastern and northern fronts. We’re talking about one or two kilometres, and we’re on the verge of achieving it, Yernaux said of the containment perimeter. In sectors accessible to crews, officials confirmed the fire is under control and contained.

Even if the perimeter is secured, the danger is far from over. During a site visit alongside King Philippe, Interior Minister Quintin cautioned that dousing and soaking the boggy terrain to prevent reignition could take several weeks. The public prosecutor’s office in Liège has opened an official investigation to determine what caused the blaze.
