YouTube is increasing subscription prices across Slovakia for individual, student, and family plans, with changes taking effect immediately for new subscribers and in September for existing accounts. Alongside the price hikes, the platform is tightening enforcement of household rules to restrict account sharing outside a single shared residence.
Digital subscriptions are growing more expensive for Slovak households. Google has begun notifying users of the platform-wide subscription price adjustments, joining a wider wave of digital price increases across the streaming sector that includes platforms such as Netflix, Spotify, and Disney+, according to reporting from Zoznam.
New Monthly Pricing Across Subscription Tiers
The price adjustments apply across all three primary subscription tiers offered in Slovakia, raising monthly costs by one to two euros depending on the plan. New subscribers face the updated rates immediately, while current subscribers will see the higher charges applied on their first billing date starting in September.
| Subscription Plan | Previous Price | New Price | Monthly Increase |
|---|---|---|---|
| Individual | 7.99 € | 8.99 € | +1.00 € |
| Student | 4.99 € | 5.99 € | +1.00 € |
| Family | 15.99 € | 17.99 € | +2.00 € |
Despite the higher fees, the platform continues to offer a one-month free trial for new users interested in testing the paid service. Premium subscribers retain access to ad-free video viewing, background audio playback, and offline video downloads.
Stricter Enforcement Rules for Shared Household Accounts
Higher bills are not the only change facing users. The platform is cracking down on account sharing by enforcing a strict requirement that all members of a family subscription must live in the same household. The policy is designed to block users from sharing family plans with friends, colleagues, or relatives living at different addresses.
To police the requirement, the service uses geographical location checks to verify where connected profiles are logging in from. Subscribers whose connected accounts show multiple separate locations can expect warning notifications. Ignoring these warnings within 14 days can result in removal from the family package or prompt a required switch to an individual subscription.
Global Metrics Changes and Earning Threshold Adjustments
Beyond pricing and household rules, the platform is rolling out structural adjustments to how it counts engagement. Beginning August 24, video views will be recorded globally as soon as playback starts—specifically after the first video frame is played. This update brings the service into alignment with short-form and social video competitors like TikTok and Instagram.

While the change is expected to drive up raw view counts, creators will still have access to traditional metrics labeled as engaged views within analytical tools. At the same time, monetization criteria are tightening. Effective February 1, creators seeking access to payouts must reach a threshold of 8,000 watch hours over the preceding 365 days.
