Capital streets traded bureaucracy for high-speed horsepower on Sunday afternoon as President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump arrived at the course for the Freedom 250 Grand Prix. Logistical Lift and Track Preparations Around the National Mall

Bringing professional open-wheel racing to the streets of Washington required an immense security and logistical undertaking. With a standard municipal speed limit of 55 mph, the nation’s capital transformed into a high-speed road course where 25 drivers faced 147 laps across a 250-mile total distance—a specific nod to the country’s 250th anniversary. Competitors zoomed past iconic landmarks including the Washington Monument, museums along the National Mall, and a finish line with the U.S. Capitol building in frame.

Bud Denker, president of Penske Corporation and chair of the race, stated that IndyCar series owner Roger Penske covered the vast majority of the financial burden for the event, including building the track and funding road improvements, while the District of Columbia handled some repaving. Among the crucial infrastructure changes required for the race was the welding of more than 200 manhole covers across city streets to ensure that the open-wheel race cars did not suck them up off the road.

Organizers projected an attendance of roughly 140,000 spectators, with many securing entry through a free general admission lottery ticket system. Premium ticket packages, meanwhile, commanded substantial prices, selling for approximately $3,600 for a pair of passes on Saturday.

Álex Palou secured the pole position for the main race, entering the weekend leading the 2026 IndyCar standings on the strength of six victories. Palou held a 133-point lead over Kyle Kirkwood and a 137-point margin over David Malukas.

“Honestly, that’s the only word that comes to mind. I remember the visit we did a month ago when I got invited to the White House. I was like, ‘Really? For real?’ I was going to be able to go inside and just see how the Oval Office is, and just knowing the history that it has.”
