Lab-Grown Human Brain Cells Reach Record Seven-Year Lifespan

Peppercorn-sized clumps of human brain cells have been grown in a laboratory for a record seven years, aging in a manner similar to cells inside the human head, according to findings published in the journal Nature. These tiny structures, known as organoids, are cultivated from stem cells by researchers worldwide to investigate brain mysteries and test new medications without the use of animals such as mice, as reported by Malaymail.

Typically, these organoids survive for only a few months, providing insight exclusively into the earliest developmental phases of human brains, which normally take nearly 20 years to mature fully. To overcome this limitation, a US-led team maintained organoids for approximately seven years, establishing a new milestone. Paola Arlotta, a Harvard University professor and senior author of the study, noted that the brain organoids continued maturing over the years despite never existing inside an embryo or a physical body.

Cellular Aging and Development Insights

Researchers analyzed the aging organoids using three different types of recently developed genetic clocks capable of approximating cellular biological age. All three methods indicated that the organoids underwent changes over time comparable to normal brain cells. According to the study, the organoids recorded the passage of time and retained a memory of developmental steps already performed.

Arlotta clarified that this cellular memory does not equate to conscious recollection, such as remembering childhood events, but rather signifies that their past is engraved on a cellular level. Organoids function as biological models or avatars that remain far less complex than actual human brains and lack sensory input. Scientists widely agree that these structures are incapable of consciousness or other higher-order brain functions.

Time-Warping Experiments With Chimeras

To test their theoretical framework further, the research team conducted an experiment by combining cells that had developed for one year with cells aged only two weeks, creating a chimera. While the younger cells behaved normally, the older cells jumped ahead a substantial portion of development and began producing neurons that typically require about four months to form.

This procedure effectively warped time for brain development, raising the possibility that researchers could one day utilize this technique to rapidly accelerate the development of specific brain cells. Prior to this research, the record for the oldest successfully grown brain organoids stood at just under two years, according to Bgnes.

Implications for Disorders and Longevity

Investigators hope the findings will clarify how various disorders, including autism and schizophrenia, initially emerge and progress later in life. Unlike brains inside the human body, these lab-grown organoids lack a physical body susceptible to illness and death. When asked whether laboratory-maintained brain organoids could hypothetically outlive humans, Arlotta stated that nobody knows for certain, though she suspected they might last slightly longer.
