Actor Andrew Garfield has admitted he frequently considers leaving Hollywood behind entirely after enduring grueling back-to-back shooting schedules. Speaking in a new interview with Variety, the 43-year-old star revealed a desire to retreat to the English countryside, marking his latest public reflection on stepping away from the intense public eye.
Following an intense stretch of professional commitments, actor Andrew Garfield has opened up about his recurrent impulse to abandon his career in film and television. The star, best known for his roles in The Amazing Spider-Man and Tick, Tick… Boom!, admitted that the constant cycle of promotion and production takes a heavy toll. Garfield has been thinking about stepping away from Hollywood for good for the past couple of years, noting that he has not always wanted to continue his career in the entertainment industry.
Back-to-Back Projects and the Desire for the Countryside
Garfield spent much of the past year engaged in continuous filming assignments. His recent slate includes the new Enid Blyton adaptation The Magic Faraway Tree alongside Claire Foy, distributed by Entertainment Film Distributors, the action period drama The Uprising, and Luca Guadagnino’s Sam Altman biopic, Artificial. The physical and emotional weight of working straight through an 11- to 12-month window has left the actor dreaming of a much quieter existence far away from the camera’s lens.
“All the time. I’ve worked a lot this year. I’ve done like 11 months, 12 months, straight back-to-back projects. I want people to see those projects, so I’m gonna have to tell people about them. I get that. But if I had my druthers, people would just see them, and I could go whittle wood in the Somerset countryside and think about what the birds might be doing.”

The actor noted that while he understands the publicity demands accompanying theatrical releases—such as The Magic Faraway Tree, which was released in theaters on August 21, 2026, and The Uprising, slated for a theater release on September 11, 2026—his personal ambitions have shifted away from mere career milestones.
Shifting Priorities Beyond Superhero Success and Award Seasons
Having checked one thing after another from his list of things he wanted to achieve, which included becoming an actor and playing the role of the masked superhero Spider-Man, Garfield described his current mindset as more existential than achievement-oriented. He emphasized a desire for meaningful connections with himself, his family, and his friends rather than chasing further accolades.
“I still have dreams, but they’re slightly more earthbound than my previous ones. They’re maybe a bit more philosophical and existential than achievement-based. Now I think it’s more I want a certain quality of life. I want a certain quality of relationships with my family and friends. I want a certain quality of relationship with myself.”

The Hacksaw Ridge star does have form when it comes to taking a break from the spotlight. In 2022, following the release of three major films—The Eyes of Tammy Faye, tick, tick… BOOM! and Spider-Man: No Way Home—Garfield revealed he was taking a career hiatus. Telling Variety at the time that he needed to recalibrate and reconsider what I want to do next and who I want to be and just be a bit of a person for a while, the actor noted that he needed to escape the washing machine of awards season and just be a bit ordinary for a while.
His absence from the screen lasted roughly two years following the release of Hulu’s true-crime series Under the Banner of Heaven in 2022. He eventually returned to lead the romantic drama We Live in Time alongside Florence Pugh, which premiered in late 2024.
