Alpine skier Federica Brignone is scheduled for surgery on August 25, 2026, to remove a plate from her left leg and clean the area. The Olympic champion reports persistent pain while skiing, stemming from a severe crash in April 2025 that fractured her tibia and fibula.
Surgical Intervention for Persistent Leg Pain
Federica Brignone announced that she will return to the operating room to address ongoing discomfort in her left leg. Despite positive overall progress in her recovery, the Italian skier continues to experience physical limitations during specific athletic movements and training sessions on snow.
The World Cup winner stated that her leg continues to improve, but unfortunately she still experiences pain while doing certain activities and on skis, updating fans and enthusiasts on her condition.
Following consultations with her medical staff, Brignone chose to undergo the procedure on the afternoon of August 25, 2026. The main objective of the surgery is the removal of the metal plate inserted during her initial post-accident trauma treatment, alongside a thorough cleaning of the affected tissue. Surgeons will also evaluate the condition of her meniscus during the operation to determine if additional repairs are necessary.
Brignone explained in her post that the main objective will be to remove the plate and clean the area, with the possibility of also intervening on the meniscus, noting that this final decision will be made directly during this afternoon’s operation.
Long Recovery Following the April 2025 Crash
The current complications trace back to a severe accident during the Italian absolute championships, where a fall during the giant slalom resulted in a complex, multi-fragment fracture of the tibial plateau and fibula head, alongside an anterior cruciate ligament tear. That injury forced a lengthy rehabilitation period that kept her away from elite competition for months.

After undergoing initial surgery and an extended recovery timeline, Brignone made a triumphant return at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympic Games, capturing gold medals in both giant slalom and super-G. However, physical discomfort persisted through the subsequent training blocks and preparation phases for the upcoming sports calendar.
On-Snow Testing and Adjusted Training Plans
Brignone had previously tested her recovery on the snow during a brief training camp alongside her brother and coach Davide on the Cervinia glacier. Initial plans included traveling to Argentina in September to train alongside her national teammates, but the persistent pain ultimately disrupted those travel schedules.

Reporting on her social media channels, the athlete assured supporters that she would provide further updates once the surgical procedure and initial evaluations are complete.
Concluding the message accompanied by the now customary tiger emoji, she noted that that is all for now and that she would keep everyone updated.
