Xbox disc-to-digital program gives physical games a digital future

Microsoft is launching a disc-to-digital program for Xbox One and Xbox Series X consoles, letting players unlock digital entitlements for thousands of physical games by inserting the disc. Testing begins for Xbox Insiders on August 31, ahead of a broader public rollout.

For decades, console owners have faced a choice between the convenience of digital downloads and the permanence of physical game discs. Soon, Xbox owners will be able to get the best of both worlds for thousands of supported titles as part of a newly announced disc-to-digital program. Console owners have long wrestled with a fundamental dilemma: the upfront convenience of digital downloads versus the tangible permanence of physical game discs. Microsoft is stepping in to bridge that divide with a newly announced disc-to-digital initiative designed to give physical games a digital future across thousands of supported titles. The disc-to-digital feature, which The Verge exclusively revealed last month, is part of work that Microsoft is doing for game preservation and in preparation for the next generation of Xbox consoles.

How the Xbox Disc-to-Digital Feature Works

The mechanics behind the new feature are straightforward. Players can claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and launching the game. The program—announced today ahead of testing for Xbox Insiders starting August 31—will let players claim a digital entitlement for most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games simply by inserting the disc into a console and launching it. Most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support this new feature, explains Jason Ronald, VP of next generation at Xbox. Players can claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and launching the game. Once claimed, that game is playable entirely digitally, eliminating the need to keep the physical media in the disc drive as long as the user or a family account member stays logged in. That game will then be playable completely digitally, without the need to ever insert the disc, as long as you (or a member of your family account) is logged in. This digital entitlement is tied to the specific disc, and it will move from account to account if you swap the physical game with a friend or log in to a different Xbox profile and try to play a disc-based game.

Microsoft plans to kick off testing for this capability with Xbox Insiders starting August 31, rolling out the feature more broadly to Xbox One and Xbox Series X consoles in the coming months. Microsoft will start testing this new Xbox disc-to-digital feature with Xbox Insider testers on August 31st, followed by a broader rollout to Xbox One and Xbox Series X consoles in the coming months.

Preservation Goals and Publisher Control

Behind the scenes, the feature ties directly into hardware evolution and long-term library retention. This is part of our broader commitment to game preservation, said Jason Ronald, VP next generation, as announced on Xbox Wire. As technology, devices, and distribution continue to evolve, preserving access to the games people own matters more than ever. While not every title will be available at launch, this is an important step toward a future where players can have greater confidence that the games they buy remain with them for years to come, says Ronald.

Even so, not every disc in a player’s collection will work right away. A leaked memo obtained by the Verge earlier this month suggests that publishers have to actively opt in to allow their game discs to activate digital entitlements, which could explain why most but not all Xbox One and Series X titles are supported. A leaked memo from earlier this month revealed that publishers would have control over the Xbox disc-to-digital, so not every game will be supported initially. We’re starting with thousands of titles, and we’ll continue to add more over time, says Ronald. Furthermore, original Xbox and Xbox 360 discs are currently omitted from the initiative, with Windows Central separately suggesting, based on discussion with unnamed sources, that some discs may be incompatible due to how they were manufactured at the time, which could explain why original Xbox and Xbox 360 discs are not being discussed for the program. What isn’t yet clear is how publishers and retailers factor into the scheme and whether third-party titles are included alongside first-party ones.

The Xbox disc-to-digital feature arrives just weeks after Sony announced it’s killing all physical PlayStation game discs. New PlayStation games released after January 2028 will be digital-only, but it’s not yet clear if Microsoft will announce a similar end of production for Xbox discs. Either way, Sony hasn’t announced a similar feature for converting an existing physical library into a digital one. Following Sony’s announcement last month that it planned to discontinue production of physical discs for new PlayStation games launching from January 2028, games will be sold only in digital format, while titles released on disc before January 2028 will not be affected. Microsoft is also bringing Xbox and Xbox 360 games to PC, in a move that could allow the next Xbox console to play every Xbox game ever made. The announcement lands a little under two months after Sharma told Xbox staff that the division’s business is not healthy, accompanied by the company announcing the divestment of five internal studios – Compulsion Games, Double Fine, Ninja Theory, Undead Labs, and Arkane – and cutting around 3,200 roles.

Licensing Limits and Platform Integration

The program introduces strict guardrails to prevent exploitation. Microsoft says that your physical disc will continue to work exactly as it always has after the digital entitlement is claimed. But before you get any ideas, the fine print on the announcement mentions that there is only one revokable license per game disc, so if you resell that disc or loan it to a friend, that digital entitlement could be transferred to a new account when someone else puts it into their console. Microsoft’s fine print stipulates that there is one revokable license per game disc. While the physical disc itself continues to work normally, loaning out or reselling that physical media means the digital entitlement can be transferred when another account redeems it. In other words, the entitlement is not a permanent extra copy; if the disc is sold or loaned, the digital access can be transferred when another account redeems it.

When a title successfully converts, it gains the flexibility of modern digital ecosystems. The digital entitlement will also allow access to features like Xbox Play Anywhere (for play on PC) and Xbox Cloud Gaming, for supported titles. Once you have a digital version of an Xbox disc game, if supported you’ll also be able to access the game on PC through Xbox Play Anywhere, or stream it to multiple devices with Xbox Cloud Gaming. For developers, the practical significance is less about retail format and more about platform behavior, widening the usefulness of a single SKU and reducing friction for players who still buy boxed copies but want digital convenience. The exact edge cases and supported-title list matter here, especially for teams thinking about ownership, account binding, and how their game appears across retail, PC, and cloud surfaces.
