The NFL is eliminating the Pro Bowl game entirely, ending decades of all-star matchups. League executives announced the shift to team owners, replacing the traditional athletic competition with an 88-player individual performance honor and an in-person celebration in Los Angeles next February.
Since 1951, the National Football League has run some version of an all-star showcase. That multi-decade run has now drawn to a close. Following years of declining player engagement, format changes, and flagging television interest, league leadership has decided to scrap the standalone game across tackle and flag football iterations.
Shifting Focus From the Field to the Honor
The league formally presented the decision to team owners, pivoting the Pro Bowl away from competition and turning it strictly into an individual performance award. Exactly 88 players will comprise each official class chosen through an equal-weighted voting process split evenly between players, coaches, and fans. Crucially, alternate selections will no longer be named.
“But ultimately, the Pro Bowl, at its core, is about honoring the best of the best in that season, on the field, in real games. And the shift here is about shifting the focus from the game — which is ultimately where people’s attention goes, especially the replacement players tied to it — to the honor.”

Player Consultations and the Loss of Competitive Fire
The decision followed extensive consultations with active athletes. Earlier in the summer, NFL executive vice president of football operations Troy Vincent Sr. led a conference call involving more than a dozen star players, including Jalen Hurts, Jalen Ramsey, George Kittle, and Dion Dawkins. Those athletes voiced clear frustration that the honor had become watered down over years of repeated roster substitutions.

League officials pointed to a long-faded era of physical competitiveness as another catalyst for the change. Vincent recalled his own selection following the 1999 season, when veteran linebacker Hardy Nickerson—playing in his fifth Pro Bowl—warned him to buckle his chinstrap because the game was treated as a fierce competition rather than an exhibition.
“‘This ain’t no party. You get a chance to spend some time at the pool today when we get back to the hotel. We came here to win a football game.’ That’s how it was. When you got to Honolulu, that was the message. That wasn’t the message anymore.”

Television Ratings and the New Celebration Format
Efforts to salvage the on-field product included moving the event to skills competitions, shifting venues away from Hawaii after 2015, and relocating the exhibition to a weekday slot right before the Super Bowl.
While post-pandemic television audiences previously hovered between 4.7 and 6.7 million viewers, last year’s weekday convention center event saw viewership plummet to 2 million. Walking away from a televised event meant sacrificing reliable broadcast inventory, but executives concluded that protecting the integrity of the award mattered more.
Instead of playing a game, the 2027 Pro Bowl class will travel to Los Angeles for an in-person gathering honoring the selected players and their families. Selected athletes will also receive permanent recognition stamped onto their uniforms, a commemorative Topps trading card, and an announcement rollout planned for late December across league and broadcast platforms.
