On August 27, 1962, NASA launched Mariner 2 from Cape Canaveral, Florida, beginning a historic 3.5-month voyage to Venus. Despite an electrical short that nearly doomed the mission at liftoff, the spacecraft achieved the world’s first successful interplanetary flyby on December 14, 1962, returning groundbreaking data on the solar system.

The launch of Mariner 2 on August 27, 1962, represented a critical turning point for the United States during the height of the Space Race, a period when the U.S. was trailing behind the Soviet Union. The Soviet achievements included launching the first satellite (Sputnik 1 in 1957), the first living creature (Laika the dog on Sputnik 2 that same year), the first human in space (Yuri Gagarin in 1961), and sending a probe to the moon (Luna 1 in 1959). Operating from Cape Canaveral atop an Atlas Agena B rocket, the Mariner program was introduced in the early 1960s when NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California, was thinking big and putting plans in motion to explore the inner solar system. The mission was designed to reach Venus after the abrupt failure of its predecessor, Mariner 1, which launched on July 22, 1962, and went awry when its Atlas-Agene ride to space veered off course, prompting range officials to send the self-destruct command and sending the spacecraft landing in the Atlantic.

Getting Mariner 2 off the ground and safely through the cosmos required surviving a cascade of mechanical hazards. The mechanical anatomy of Mariner 2 was nearly identical to that of Mariner 1, equipped with a crystal microphone to measure cosmic dust, a proton detector, and other instruments to perform first-of-their-kind investigations. Shortly after liftoff atop the rocket, an electrical problem with the Atlas-Agena caused it to start rolling, which made it unable to respond to any guidance commands from mission control. By some miracle, the booster managed to correct itself after about a minute, and Mariner 2 was on its way to Venus.
The approximately 110-day interplanetary trek proved equally volatile. The spacecraft suffered a solar panel power drop out two times, experienced glitchy attitude control gyroscopes, and began to overheat surprisingly as it approached its Venus flyby, prompting worries it might be cooked before it even reached the planet. As NASA historians noted, the spacecraft encountered several hardware anomalies during its journey, many of which inexplicably fixed themselves, allowing the probe to continue its historic approach.

By mid-December 1962, Mariner 2 successfully completed its flyby, passing within 21,564 miles (34,675 kilometers)—also cited by sources as within 21,500 miles—of the hellish planet. Though the probe carried no cameras, its instrument payload yielded profound discoveries. The mission confirmed the existence of solar wind, defined as a stream of charged particles that flow outwards from the sun, took measurements of interplanetary dust that revealed it to be more scarce than originally predicted, and took the first close measurements of Venus at the time, reading the surface temperature of Venus and finding a dense cloud layer about 35-50 miles above the planet’s surface.

Those temperature readings, along with observations of the Venus atmosphere, proved to scientists that the planet experienced a runaway greenhouse effect in the past. Furthermore, the probe’s radio signals were used to calculate Venus’ mass in extreme detail. Reflecting on the singular nature of the endeavor, Jack James, NASA’s Mariner 2 project manager at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, stated before his death in 2001:
There will be other missions to Venus, but there will never be another first mission to Venus.

Following its successful flyby, JPL officially lost contact with Mariner 2 on January 3, 1963, less than one month after its flyby. The historic spacecraft is thought to remain in orbit around the Sun. Although Mariner 2 would be the program’s poster child, JPL continued to make scientific and technological breakthroughs with the spacecraft’s successors. By the end of the Mariner endeavor in 1975, the program had witnessed seven successful launches out of ten attempts, with the missions exploring much of our inner solar system.
