Adults who have at least one parent reach the age of 100 experience longer lifespans and significantly lower risks of developing cardiovascular disease and hypertension compared to individuals whose parents had shorter lifespans. Published in JAMA Network Open, the research represents the largest study to date focusing on the offspring of centenarians.
Groundbreaking Study Reveals Health Benefits for Centenarians’ Offspring
Researchers analyzed data compiled from three geographically diverse and long-running projects located in the United States and the United Kingdom: the Einstein-led LonGenity Study, the New England Centenarian Study at Boston University, and the UK Biobank. The comprehensive analysis evaluated 2,319 offspring of centenarians alongside a control group of 2,703 individuals whose parents lived to age 85 or younger, or who were spouses of the centenarians’ offspring.
Key Findings on Mortality and Cardiovascular Health
The study demonstrated consistent outcomes across the distinct scenarios analyzed. Descendants of centenarians exhibited a 42% lower risk of mortality at any given age. Furthermore, they showed a 33% lower probability of suffering from cardiovascular diseases and a 32% reduction in the risk of hypertension.
However, the protective hereditary advantages did not extend across every major medical condition. The investigation found that centenarians’ offspring were no less likely to develop cancer than the general population, a conclusion that aligns with earlier medical literature. Protection against stroke remained inconclusive, with a reduced risk identified in only two of the three evaluated databases.
Genetics Versus Lifestyle Factors
While the study highlights the strong transmission of exceptional health across generations, experts emphasize that individual choices still play a critical role in overall wellness. Eric Reed, a staff scientist in medicine and lead author of the study, noted that this is not to say that lifestyle does not count, as healthy behaviors remain important for everyone, as reported by Yahoo Finance, adding that some people from families with exceptional longevity appear to enjoy biological advantages that help them remain healthy despite the environmental and behavioral factors that affect us all.

Sofiya Milman, professor of medicine and genetics at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and senior author of the research, explained that centenarians offer vital perspectives on healthy aging. The research team sought to determine whether these individuals pass their longevity down to their offspring through fundamental biological mechanisms rather than purely behavioral habits.
Future Directions in Aging Research
Although the project was not structured to isolate the specific inherited genetic traits responsible for the phenomenon, researchers believe examining families with exceptional longevity opens a unique window into human biology. Dr. Milman indicated that identifying these protective factors could eventually lead to medical treatments designed to mimic naturally occurring longevity mechanisms. Such advancements might assist individuals who did not inherit extreme lifespan advantages in achieving healthier, more extended lives.

Echoing this perspective, Paola Sebastiani, director of the Center for Quantitative Methods and Data Science at Tufts Medical Center and a co-author of the study, noted that the data brings science closer to unlocking the biological elements that protect against age-related decline.
