Netflix Orders Manifest Spinoff Arrivals

Netflix has officially greenlighted Arrivals: A New Manifest Mystery, a sci-fi spinoff from the creators of the original series “Manifest.” Announced on August 28, the new show features a new cast of characters, a Denver plane crash-landing mystery, and a return by showrunners Jeff Rake, Margaret Easley, and Laura Putney.

Netflix Greenlights Arrivals: A New Manifest Mystery On 828 Day

The drama universe that once faced total cancellation is expanding at Netflix. Five years to the minute after the streaming service announced its rescue of the original series for a final season, Netflix greenlighted the spinoff series Arrivals: A New Manifest Mystery, according to reporting from trade publications.

The announcement arrived on August 28—a date celebrated by fans as 828 Day in honor of the fictional Montego Air Flight 828 from the mothership series. The streaming platform rolled out the news at 8:28 AM PT, continuing a promotional tradition it established when it first picked up the original show in 2021.

Rumors about Netflix exploring a Manifest spinoff started circulating soon after Season 4 Part 2 was released in June 2023. By end of 2024, the project was in development at the streamer. By end of 2025, the spinoff had opened a writers room. And earlier this month, the series had started meeting with directors. Every step of the way, Netflix would not confirm the spinoff’s status — or even its existence — until this morning, on “828 Day,” when fans celebrate the series about the mystery of Flight 828, at 8:28 AM PT.

While the franchise is returning, the upcoming series shifts away from the original passengers and timeline. Instead of a multi-year time jump, the new narrative centers on a different kind of vanishing and amnesia.

Official logline

In Arrivals, when a mysterious plane crash-lands in Denver, the passengers emerge with no memory of who they are, where they came from, or why they’re here. A young social worker and a novice Homeland Security agent team up with the new arrivals in an attempt to stop a humanity-ending catastrophe, discovering along the way that they are all part of the very puzzle they’re trying to solve.

Original series creator and showrunner Jeff Rake is returning to helm the project alongside familiar internal talent. He is joined by former co-executive producers Margaret Easley and Laura Putney, who are stepping up as co-creators and co-showrunners for the new venture. Warner Bros. TV is back as studio.

“We are thrilled to expand the ‘Manifest’ universe with ‘Arrivals,’ led by the original creative team of Jeff Rake, Margaret Easley and Laura Putney,” Jinny Howe, Netflix head of scripted series, US & Canada, said in a statement. Their return ensures the creative continuity essential to this franchise, allowing us to honor what made the original a phenomenon while introducing a fresh perspective for fans worldwide.

“But the world of Manifest has more stories to tell,” Rake said in a statement. “To now bring fans a brand-new mystery from that world is quite simply beyond my wildest dreams.”

Building on Global Viewership Numbers From the Original Series

The greenlight comes on the heels of streaming performance figures for the mothership series. Originally launched on NBC in September 2018, the second season followed in 2020 and the third in 2021; however, NBC decided to cancel the show in June 2021. Manifest was picked up by Netflix for a fourth and final season, which was split into two parts. The first chapter was released in November 2022 and the second in June 2023.
