Catastrophic flash floods and landslides triggered by a glacier collapse in Nepal and Tibet have killed at least 579 people, with roughly 2,500 people still unaccounted for. Rescue operations are intensifying as helicopters airlift survivors and workers race to reach trapped individuals in damaged mountain infrastructure.
Rescuers pulled mud-caked survivors from disaster zones on Friday while helicopters lifted stranded people to safety following a massive disaster in the Himalayan region. The disaster, which struck on Wednesday, was triggered when a rocky ledge and the lower portion of a glacier collapsed high in the mountains. The rockfall registered as a magnitude 5.2 seismic event, sending a sudden wall of mud, water, and debris crashing down into valleys in both Nepal and Tibet.
Rising Death Toll and Missing Persons Across Nepal and Tibet
Official casualty figures have climbed steadily as rescue teams push into isolated mountain areas. Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority reported that the confirmed death toll in the country had risen to 579, while 1,924 people remain unaccounted for. Local Nepalese media indicated that up to 12,000 individuals could potentially be missing, though authorities have not confirmed that higher figure.
Hundreds of the missing are foreign nationals who were working, trekking, or making religious pilgrimages to a sacred peak on the Tibet side of the border. Meanwhile, rescue coordination efforts have successfully brought more than 3,700 people to safety in Nepal, with helicopters airlifting over 3,000 evacuees to Kathmandu and other secure locations.
Hydropower Tunnel Rescue Operations in Rasuwa
In Nepal’s Rasuwa district, military rescue personnel focused heavily on extracting individuals trapped inside a hydropower tunnel connected to the Upper Trishuli-1 Hydropower Project. Video footage from the site showed security forces pulling survivors covered in thick, dark brown mud out of the blocked subterranean structure.
Brig. Gen. Raja Ram Basnet, Nepal Army spokesperson, stated that it was complicated to find the entry and exit points of the tunnel because everything had been covered by mud, and added that their first priority was rescuing the stranded people.

Geoscientists examining satellite imagery determined that bedrock underneath a glacier in the Hindu Kush Himalayan region gave way. Jakob Steiner, a geoscientist at the University of Graz in Austria, described the geological fracture by noting that a lower part of a glacier came off as if someone had cut through the entire lower section with a huge knife. Researchers point out that the region is warming rapidly, driving major shifts in mountain slopes, snow cover, and permafrost.
Compounding the disaster, a new barrier lake formed upstream after debris dammed river flows on the Chinese side of the mountains. Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported that the lake sits at an elevation of 9,680 feet—roughly 3,280 feet above Gyirong Port, a border crossing decimated by the initial wall of water. Although Nepal Police issued a fresh warning after receiving word that a dam on the Tibetan side was running over, subsequent reports from CCTV indicated that flooding risks from the overflowing lake were ultimately evaluated as manageable.
