Arsenal are exploring a late move for Lyon winger Malick Fofana as the transfer window draws to a close, following the impending departure of Gabriel Martinelli to Al-Hilal and failed pursuits of other high-profile attacking targets across Europe.
With the summer transfer window closing on Tuesday night, Arsenal have turned their attention toward securing reinforcements for manager Mikel Arteta’s frontline. The Premier League champions had spent much of the window chasing marquee targets on the left flank, including Real Madrid winger Vinícius Júnior. Those plans shifted when Vinícius signed a new long-term contract at the Santiago Bernabéu, forcing the club to look elsewhere as Leandro Trossard’s departure to Beşiktaş left a void on the wing.
Financial Pressures at Lyon Open the Door for Fofana
The situation in France has created a timely opportunity for interested suitors. Lyon find themselves under financial pressure to sell players after failing to qualify for the Champions League. Fofana, a 21-year-old Belgium international and the Ligue 1 club’s most valuable asset, has emerged as a primary target. According to reporting from RMC Sport, Arsenal have made enquiries to determine the conditions required to bring the youngster to the Premier League.
Fofana has scored 19 goals and provided eight assists in 84 appearances for Lyon since joining the club from Gent in 2024. Crystal Palace previously reached an agreement with Lyon for the winger, but the player turned down a move to Selhurst Park, clearing the path for a larger club to step in. Gabriel Martinelli is closing in on a £56m move to Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal, leaving Arteta with reduced options on the left flank.
