European soccer is getting a new piece of memorabilia. When players step onto the pitch for their first-ever appearance in Europe’s premier club competition, their jerseys will display a dedicated sleeve patch. The emblem is incorporated directly into the Champions League Starball badge on the player’s sleeve.
How the UEFA Champions League Debut Patch Program Works on the Pitch
The initiative applies strictly to on-pitch debuts. Players who come off the bench as substitutes are eligible to receive the patch, but unused substitutes named to a matchday squad must wait until they actually enter a game. Once a player makes their tournament debut, they will never wear the patch again, even if they transfer to another club playing in UEFA club competitions.
Design and positioning for the sleeve markers were developed alongside Topps and official patch supplier ID Unlimited.
From Matchday Jerseys to One-of-One Collectible Trading Cards
The journey from a player’s debut to collector packs involves a tightly controlled authentication chain. Immediately following a match, the distinctive blue debut element is removed from the match-worn shirt. According to tournament organizers, the extracted patch is securely packaged, identified, and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity before being sent to Topps.
Topps integrates the authenticated component into a one-of-one trading card that features the player’s autograph. Once the removable element is detached, the underlying badge on the jersey retains a visual reference to mark the milestone, allowing the player to keep the shirt as personal memorabilia.

This launch coincides with a broader commercial expansion. UEFA and Fanatics are extending their partnership through a six-year deal lasting until 2033, brokered by global sales and marketing agency Relevent Football Partners.
“Renewing our partnership with Fanatics for UEFA club competitions reflects the strength of our collaboration and our shared commitment to delivering best-in-class products for fans and collectors globally.”
Aleksander Čeferin, UEFA president
“The timing of this announcement – on the eve of the Champions League season – is incredibly meaningful for us, especially as Fanatics Collectibles continues to meaningfully expand its footprint across Europe.”
Michael Rubin, Founder and CEO of Fanatics
Global Expansion and Expected Stars for the 2026-27 Campaign
The debut patch initiative is already familiar to fans of other major sports leagues. The program originated in Major League Baseball before expanding across the NFL, NBA, Bundesliga, Formula 1, MLS, UFC, WWE, and international fixtures like this summer’s World Cup. The concept is also scheduled to reach the Women’s Champions League starting in the 2027-28 season.

High-value debut cards have commanded massive sums in recent public sales. For instance, a debut card featuring Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes sold for $1.1 million to Dick’s Sporting Goods in March 2025.
As the men’s Champions League competition gets underway, attention turns to incoming roster changes across Europe’s 36 qualifying clubs. Players in line for their tournament debuts include major transfer arrivals such as Real Madrid’s Yan Diomande, who joined from RB Leipzig in a €140 million deal, alongside Manchester United’s Carlos Baleba and Liverpool pair Jérémy Jacquet and Víctor Muñoz.
