Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is scheduled to release on February 12, 2027, for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, Switch 2, and PC. Developed by Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog under Amazon Game Studios, the Unreal Engine 5 remake reimagines the 1996 classic while introducing modern mechanics like crafting and a navigation scanner.

Thirty years after Lara Croft’s debut in the original Tomb Raider, the franchise is receiving a comprehensive Unreal Engine 5 reimagining rather than a basic visual touch-up. Crystal Dynamics has handed primary development duties for Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis to Polish studio Flying Wild Hog, forming an internal cross-studio collective known as Team Atlantis.

The upcoming title is slated to launch on February 12, 2027, across Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam, published by Amazon Game Studios. The game leads a double-pronged anniversary rollout alongside Tomb Raider: Catalyst, a separate sequel set years after 2008’s Tomb Raider: Underworld that is expected in 2028.

“We are really good at breaking down the invisible walls that we can build between studios during development.”

Reimagining Ancient Greece and the Damocles Room

During a hands-off demonstration at Gamescom, developers showcased a fresh look at Ancient Greece, placing Lara deep beneath St. Francis’ Folly in an updated version of the iconic Damocles Room sword puzzle. Game director Raul Siqueira described the setting as very iconic and beloved, blending architectural grandeur with subterranean wilderness.

While the vertical layout, vertiginous chamber, and four-key retrieval structure remain faithful to the 1996 original, the environment benefits significantly from Unreal Engine 5 lighting and thick subterranean vegetation. Voice actor Alix Wilton Regan reprises her role, bringing a lighthearted tone to the explorer that contrasts with the darker atmosphere of the recent reboot trilogy.

Modern Mechanics Meet Classic Puzzles

Team Atlantis has implemented several contemporary game systems that depart from the original design. Traditional first-aid kits have been entirely removed in favor of a crafting system where Lara gathers environmental items to cook stat-boosting meals and health tinctures. Players also have access to a skill tree to upgrade abilities, such as extending the effective range of her dual pistols.

Combat and navigation encounters have likewise been updated. Classic enemies like bats now attack in unpredictable swarms, requiring players to mix pistol fire with melee button prompts to bat them away. Meanwhile, the infamous falling swords of Damocles feature dramatic cutscenes and quick-time events, though observant players can shoot the blades down prematurely if positioned within range.

Lara is now equipped with an optional environment scanner that highlights interactive objects and provides lore details.

Lara explained that the gate was still shut and that the opening mechanism had four distinct slots.

Tank Controls Left Behind for Modern Audiences

Purists hoping for the return of historical movement schemes will find that Legacy of Atlantis drops the grid-based tank controls entirely. Siqueira noted that replaying both the 1996 original and the 2007 remake, Tomb Raider: Anniversary, made it clear that control schemes needed adjustment for contemporary players.

The control scheme has been adapted to fit the modern audience, Siqueira explained, noting that the recent Tomb Raider 1 Remastered remains available for enthusiasts who prefer the challenge of legacy inputs.
